if you dont know who to address it to) Address of organisation Dear (title and surname only eg Ms Carter,) First paragraph Unsurprisingly, this is your brief introduction. Start off with who you are, what year of study you are in, details of your degree and university. Provide details of the placement scheme, including key information (starting date availability, length of placement, full time, whether you will work voluntarily or if you need to be paid!). Give any other useful information, will you be living close by, is the placement easily accessible to you, demonstrate that you have given this some thought. Second paragraph This is your opportunity to show you have done some research into the organisation, explain a bit about why you are applying to that organisation, and for that particular department /role/project. Attempt to show that you know a bit about your prospective employer and about the role you are seeking in general. What work does the organisation do? What are its strengths? Be as specific as you can - why this placement with this employer? Third paragraph Talk about your own strengths and why you are suited to this type of work (include modules that you have studied which relate to the organisation s activities). Make a link between the organisation and you: where do their aims coincide with yours? Highlight any relevant skills and experience you have to offer. Back up your statements with evidence, how did you gain that skill and refer to sections of your CV. Fourth paragraph Any other relevant points, little extras you might want to mention. Maybe you have travelled and feel it has been of benefit to you in terms of this placement. Include any interests/roles of responsibility that are particularly relevant to the post or demonstrate a particular skill such as leadership from captaining a sports team. Final paragraph Tell them when youll be available for interview and that you look forward to hearing from them. This could be during the holidays so make sure they can contact you. Yours sincerely, (if you know their name but arent acquainted with them) or Yours faithfully (if you havent addressed it to anyone specific) Remember: sign the letter!
