Satire Activity The cultural impact of and controversy over Mark Twains The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn continues. Today you will investigate allusions to the novel and the controversy surrounding it in political cartoons. 1) Study the cartoons provided. 2) Choose 5 cartoons. 3) Create a poster. Cut and paste your chosen cartoons onto the poster. 4) For each cartoon write the following information: a) What is being satirized in the cartoon. b) What is the view of the cartoon (what point is the artist making about the subject)? c) How is Huck Finn, Twain or any of his other works used or referenced in the cartoon (be as specific as possible!) d) In your opinion, is the use of Huck Finn or Twain appropriate and/or effective? Explain. 5) On a separate sheet of paper, write a reaction to these cartoons. Do they seem to share the same message? How do these cartoons represent TONE? Do you agree or disagree with the views presented in these cartoons? Explain. (this is an individual response)
