Objective:
Understand uses of symbolism, visual distortion, irony, caricature, argument, uses and
misuses, and biases in political cartoons.
Materials Needed:

Discovery:
Participants should read the checklist as a group and decide which of the categories their
cartoon fits.

Explain what the meaning, purpose, and bias behind the cartoon.
Teacher Role:
The teacher will pass out the documents to each group. If there is an intentional
differentiation, pass out the determined cartoon for the group. The teacher will guide
participants if needed in the discovery portion of the activity and reinforce findings as
shared with the whole group.
