TUESDAY DECEMBER 3

We make some tough moral decisions and then argue about them/Antigone & Civil Disobedience Research

WRITING PREP
Antigone is a tragedy in which the main character makes a profound decision to disobey the law of the city-state (polis) so that she can honor her family and uphold the laws of the gods. Today, both individually, and in group, we are going to make decisions about tough moral issues in which there are no easy answers. Before we do that, I want you each to answer the prompt below for yourself. What makes a person loyal? Is there a limit to your loyalty as a brother/sister/daughter/son/friend? Explain where you draw the line between helping a loved one and risking yourself.

ASSIGNMENT GUIDELINES
For every scenario that you encounter today, you are to do thesethings.

Create a list that supports both sides of the argument. Lets use the Writing Prep as basis for an example problem.
PERSONAL BELIEF VS. LOYALTY
You are an extremely loyal person. Your best friend, the person you know best in the whole world, arrives in the middle of the night asking for your help. If you dont help them, they will surely get caught, but if you do help them, its not guaranteed that you will succeed in escaping. A very short time ago, they beat a man, nearly to death, who had done them wrong a few days before. You do not agree with their decision, and told them not to do it. But you know they committed the crime they are running from. And you know that if you help them, and get caught, that you will spend a significant amount of time in jail. Do you help them? *Provide 3-5 reasons to help them (Loyalty) and 3-5 reasons that you should remain true to your personal beliefs. After you have 3-5 for each side, weight the arguments

SCENARIO 1: PRIDE VS. FAMILY

In this scene from Breaking Bad, Season 1, Walter White (hes the guy in the glasses) works at a carwash for extra income. In the scene, he ends up washing the wheels of avery dislikable student of his. In your notebook, answer these prompts by yourself.

A. What do you want Walter to do? Why?

B. Come up with 3-5 reasons that
1. Support why Walter should quit the job and go home 2. Support why Walter should stay on the job

C. After you have answered the prompts, talk with your partner, and those around you, about your answers. Be prepared to share your personal answers.

SCENARIO 2: MOMENTARY REVENGE VS. BEING THE BIGGER PERSON

This is a scene from the same episode of Breaking Bad (its been a tough day for Walt). Here, he and his wife, Skylar, are shopping for clothes with their physically disabled son, Walt, Jr. Obviously, some more obnoxious teenagers are causing Walt some trouble. Begin by working alone and answering the questions in your notebook. A. What do you want Walter to do? Why? B. Come up with 3-5 reasons that
1. Support why Walter should confront the moron teenagers (no offense). 2. Support why Walter should be the bigger man and go home with his loving family and forget all about those moron teenagers (again, no offense).

C. After you have answered the prompts, talk with your partner, and those around you, about your answers. Be prepared to share your personal answers.

SCENARIO 2: SWEET, SWEET, MOMENTARY REVENGE VS. BEING THE BIGGER PERSON (SUPER YAWN)

CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE
For the remainder of class, I want you to use your phones to research these three momentous acts of civil disobedience. Remember, Antigone, though it is a tragedy, is ultimately a drama about a young womans defiant act of disobedience towards the state (polis). In your notebook, I want you to write down five key facts about each of the examples below. 1. Gandhis march to the sea http://www.history.com/this-day-inhistory/gandhi-leads-civil-disobedience 2. Dr. King and the Montgomery bus boycott http://mlkkpp01.stanford.edu/index.php/encyclopedia/encyclopedia/enc_montgo mery_bus_boycott_1955_1956/ 3. Shays Rebellion http://www.infoplease.com/encyclopedia/history/shaysrebellion.html
