Fernando Bermudez Dr. Ingram Engl 1101-001 4 December 2013 Writing, in College, Easy?

I dont believe I learned much from high school, as much as I should have before coming to college. Especially when it came to writing, because every assignment is based on context or books we just read, so it appears difficult, personally. But when I came to college, my world change because it all of sudden got easy. Sure the class is 1101, but the assignment wasnt as bad or crazy. All we need to do is writing and being creative; there were some restrictions to the assignment, we had to use MLA format and write letters formatting for our RRL. But the question that hit me was, writing, in college, easy? Could college writing be easier than high school? When I first sat in Professor Ingrams class I thought the instructor was going to be very critical on our papers and expecting a great paper, not trash. I was under the assumption that college would be difficult than high school assignments. I mean its college; my chemistry class is difficult compared to a high school level chemistry class. Each assignment handed out by our Professor Ingram seems simpler, although I would ponder, How Im going to write this, where do I begin? But when it came to our blog post through Weebly, I was astonished, because this is where my perspective over writing has changed. When I wrote my recent blog, about my Halloween plans and the thought of my birthday, I quote October is always my favorite month of the year, because of the trick or

treatin' and most importantly because of my birthday. October will always be my favorite month, hands down. But comparing this assignment to another from high school, I feel any student could learn more this way, because its like writing in a journal. But lets get down to business. Please read along this essay as you navigate through my site. Weebly is amazing the minute you see my home page youll see a quick bio about me, from where I graduated high school, interests, and favorite movies. I chose this method of introduction, because I would like the viewers to get an idea of my format/theme as they go through each tab found on my site. Honestly, I didnt do much of forming site through high school except with codes embedded through notepad, so this was new. Especially in the writing process, I wish every writing teacher or professor could implement this method into their teaching. Onto the first tab we go, labeled Port of Blogging. As mentioned in the previous paragraph about interests, I chose a video game theme because I like science fiction behind video games, where futuristic ideas come to mind. Some examples of sci-fi are Star Wars, Aliens, Starship Troopers, and anything that has unrealistic technology. First tab of the tour, I chose to entitle my blog tab with, Port of Blogging, because of the idea of a space port, which is similar to an airport. This is where most of our assignments have been posted to show our progression in writing. As mention on why Im fascinated with video games, I grew up around video games; I chose an image of Starcraft, a real-time strategy game, as a perfect representation of science fiction about a war between three races. The terrans, aka us humans, possess technology to travel far distance in space, to construct buildings, and heavy mechanical armor, as a second exoskeleton. As you read along my blog post, youll notice some pictures added to each context, minus the first two blog post. But pay attention to the actual detail written, in my blog tab. Unlike high school English class, we had warms-up where we

practiced finding errors and fixing them, I didnt find this as helpful. As I wrote many other assignments, I write as if I spoke to someone in person. Compared to high school we didnt use this form of template, such as writing blogs about my Halloween plans. I dont remember any of my high school teachers asking about my plans for Halloweens, except when we come back from a summer break, holidays, or unless youre close to talk with them. Another blog I could refer to as comparison is my third blog post, where our instructor gave us space to write whats on our mind. Unlike high school there were rules and templates to follow, where here we can work around them, and still give what the teacher is looking for. So back to the post there were some limits as to what were some questions the teacher have asked us. Previously mentioned there are pictures to represent either the theme or a relation to the blog. When I first spoke about a bike its an imaginative type of transportation that every man wants, I wish I did but it fits in with the theme. Same goes for the picture shown in post number four, because I wrote, This weekend I spent time bonding with my older brother through a game of Starcraft. But this image also represented my recent activity. The last picture was a mistake, but it had its use, the Coca Cola logo represent as my interest that I love Coca Cola, but because of the assignment that we had to analyze Banksys piece, which strikes a resemble to the Coca Cola bottle. There were a lot of details embedded into our blog table, from assignments to images. Next we follow our first, major writing assignment, which was our literacy narrative. Starting from the top, youll see the headlines and a button, which leads to a website where everyone can find more information about the fable Odyssey. Below the first title there were images that display feedback from my professor. I saw that there was work to be done before posting the final draft. I took necessary steps to make revisions for this paper, but its importance

was to compare the work we have done in high school to college assignments, if they are easy, difficult, fun, creative, or inspiring for us to learn and/or work. I engaged in some risky parts in combining two forms of work into this paper to focus on Greek Mythology, because that was our course theme for an entire month. In this assignment between two completely different thoughts, but I tried to mix both ideas for the main focus about Greek Mythology, because I want to compare similarity from both two ideas. Moving to our next tab, MIDTERM, most students in college get worry over mid-terms because were half way through a semester and we are shown our grades to determine should we move forward or call it quits. In high school there was no such thing as mid-term, only the word, test. And we did have to study to keep our grades high. There isnt much to say here because I didnt know what else to add, except the mid-term itself. Our job was to reflect back to the beginning of when we first did our blogs and answer some central questions towards our course theme, High School vs. College. This assignment was very helpful in organizing my points as I write, because my organization skills on paper was terrible, so in this task it helped in keeping my points in line, as I write. Some questions related to the differences between High school and college, whether its success, how do we ourselves in transition to college, or how can we adapt. I quote, as an example, to have good time management and decision making skills, as advice to future college freshman. From personal experience I didnt believe I had enough time for almost anything. One of the things that high didnt teach me as much about time managing, fortunately I made due. The last paragraph, similar to my main point here in my paper, Writing, in College, Easy? Once you step into English 1101 your perspective over writing changes, because it changed mine. From blogs to my assignments, I actually have seen my technique have improved,

since the very beginning. I had a gut feeling that introduced earlier that Im learning more about writing here, in college than I was in high school. Let us move onto our next stop, Genre. Under Genre our assignment was to portray difference between two assignments, one from our high school career and another from our college career, thus far. The first thing youll see is a book cover of the tale, The Lady or the Tiger. Beside the image is a button, which similar in the Literacy tab, will send the readers to site to gain more information about the story and the concept of justice, in Lady or the Tiger. Next is a work piece from my high school career as an example of what I did for my class, regarding to writing an ending on what became of the common man, whether he died or lived. There is a comment box below because I would like to see how people will pass judgment allowing the man to live or die. Last but not least is the final product; my genre analysis read earlier I have compared two products relating to our course theme, High School vs. College. Where if you read its context youll see some difference and similarity on both levels of education, whether the success we gained from high school could really help us adapt to college. I did have fun writing this assignment because of the first part, in which I took the tale of, the Lady or the Tiger, as an example of free writing without any template, written only for a grade. The same goes for my second product used in the comparison under MLA format; I was able to write freely without making any type of organization. This is what excites me that lead me to believe that writing is easier in college. Final pit stop of the day is our tab, Extra, under this tab are examples of out of class assignment to contributed to our learning experience in our 1101 class. In conclusion the best way to adapt from a transition from high school to college is through writing and practice from writing journals or constructing mini projects from poems to

various types of writing. Another set of tools that will prove useful are time management and decision making. I learned a lot from my class in the past five months. Viewing the grading scale, I believe I deserve an Aor aB, because I may have been quick with my work and grammar that I make careless mistakes, but I put a lot of effort into writing and making revisions. I engaged in risk taking and the writing process/revision by adding elements that may deem unnecessary to some; however I always did go back and made any changes that had to be made. I have both concepts through my literacy narrative to combine two ideas into the relation of the main focus. But all is well and ends well; I had so much fun participating in English 1101.
