DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A POLICE OFFICER IN TODAYS WORLD?

The Howard County Police Youth Academy is a free one-week overnight program held at the James N. Robey Public Safety Training Center in Marriottsville, Maryland. The program is designed to help young people explore career and leadership opportunities, life skills and character education. Participants will learn the many skills needed to be successful police officers in todays world through daily classroom instruction, role playing and practical exercises. Explore what an exciting and challenging career in law enforcement could be! Learn how to conduct criminal investigations, tactical operations and traffic enforcement while receiving hands-on experience in administering first aid, learning defensive tactics, processing crime scenes and operating simulators for driving and firearms. Students will experience: Strict discipline, inspections, drills, ceremonies and physical activities Realistic scenarios based on subjects learned Achievement tests Cook out for students and staff Entertainment, including confidence-building courses, and field games Graduation ceremony (parents and family encouraged to attend) Certificates upon completion of academy

Applications may be obtained at Howard County public high schools by contacting the School Resource Officer or online at www.HCPD.org. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicant must be between the ages of 15 and 18 Applicant must have at least a 2.0 grade point average Applicant must provide a letter of recommendation from a faculty member at his or her school Applicant must have a complete physical examination prior to the start of the academy Applicant must pass a thorough background examination and have had no adverse police contact Although there is no residency requirement, preference will be given to Howard County residents

REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 18 years of age, be a person of upstanding character, who currently maintains at least a 2.0 Grade Point Average, and has had no adverse contact with the police. Applicants must provide at least one letter of recommendation from a teacher or administrator from his/her school, detailing why the applicant would be an excellent candidate for the 2012 Youth Police Academy. Applicants are subject to a thorough background examination.
