SPEECH ANALYSIS PAPER ASSIGNMENT

1. Id listened to To Write Love On Her Arms in the Fall Semester. 2. During the current semester I watched the speech in person. 3. 4. In the speech I attended, To Write Love On Her Arms, on Tuesday 8 th, October during the Fall Semester 2013 at the Student Event Center, a young man introduced us, the audience present, on a very interesting topic: depression. The intended audience of the speech included students from the Salt Lake Community College, relatives of the students, people who saw the banners of the event, and mostly people around the ages of 30-50. The speech mainly was about the causes, effects, and consequences of depression. This speech was really effective on the persons that were listening because they looked very interested in general, it is actually, a matter of fact on people of this ages and an aspect that should be treated in society. The speaker achieved the intended purpose of informing the audience about these causes, effects, and consequences that lead to depression, motivating them to participate and give comments and share their experiences. I was really pleased with his speech, I enjoyed the talk and left with a feeling that wanted to learn more. About the things I liked in this speech, the audience was focused on listening to the man giving the talk, who had a positive attitude; he spoke on a good tone of voice, told stories and made funny and interesting quotes, he reflected with his words the entire subject that was taking place; the time when the speech started was very punctual (at noon) and I didnt felt bored, the presentation with images and beautiful phrases was a great aid; also, the cookies that the guests were invited to take were delicious and the catalogs they gave complemented the speech. Now referring to the elements of the speech, the Appropriateness of the topic and the purpose for the audience and the rhetorical situation I consider were all chosen effectively because the subject talked about the depression in college, and the speech was given in the auditorium of the Taylorsville Redwood Campus, were students assist. As on the Critique Form, the speaker arranged his speech using the Organizational elements in the Narrative Pattern because he started telling us the story of a depressive girl, without excluding the effect and cause of her depression; he stated a clear thesis of his speech and thats important. I consider that the content of his talk was done well, he did not forget the main parts of the speech: introduction,

body, and conclusion, but he didnt mention if he met the girl whom he was talking about and thats part of the testimony and evidence, in order to reach a complete reasoning of the purposed speech. Finally, as on the Form, the Delivery of a speech is the moment of truth, and this, as I evaluated was shown appropriately from the man giving his talk: very enthusiastic and natural when speaking (adequate body movements that didnt cause distraction to the audience rather than to make them focus), Speaking from Memory as described before, controlled voice with a smooth volume with varying intonation depending on the part of the story he was narrating, standard pace (Speaking rate) when conveying the speech, avoided annoying vocal fillers such as oh, umm, etc., watched the pronunciation of his words and used a Microphone in good condition so that the people present could hear and understand clearly, also maintained adequate facial expressions (never exaggerated), looked at the persons eyes either when talking and listening to the critics that arouse during the speech, he was dressed casual to attend the speech but maintaining a great appearance (good condition), and it seemed like he practiced his presentation suitably (adequately) before going to the place too, because not only he impacted the individuals or group of people in the audience, but also let us with a sense of wanting to learn more about the subject, which is really interesting if we analyze it, and as in the story, you do not want to give up! The conclusion of the event was satisfactory and everybody leaved with a memory of it in their minds; in my case, I collected a bracelet as a souvenir to remember the occasion, it says the following: FEARS VS DREAMS, and this catching phrase: I am living a story. I will not give up..
