Native American Masks Grade: 5th Big Idea An identity can be changed by using a mask.

Also, a completely new identity can be created by making a mask. The colors and patterns on the mask can also impact the meaning or characteristics of the mask. b!ecti"es The students will learn about the different uses of masks focusing on the uses of masks in #ati"e American cultures. They will also learn about how masks relate to identity. $They can create a new identity or enhance your own% The students will create their own masks using paper mache and paint. The students will learn how to paper mache properly. &aterials &ask form $for paper maching%, 'aper $#ews paper and colored paper%, 'aper &ache 'aste, (ontainers for 'aste, 'encils, )harpie $if there is time for this step%, 'aint $Tempera%, 'aint Brushes Time line *ay +: Intro to lesson, paper mache demo and mask design sketching The students will be shown a "ideo made by #ike that shows different athletes wearing different masks that highlight their talents and skills. The students will be asked to talk about what sort of masks they saw. ,-hat were some of the masks you saw.. ,-hat kind of characteristics did they ha"e.. -hen they answer the /uestions start talking about what mask was what and how they represented each of the athletes indi"idually. Go into a discussion about what masks can be used for $asking students to answer% ,They can be used to disguise yourself, highlight a certain characteristics, change your identity, etc.. The students will then be gi"en a demo on how to paper mache their mask forms making sure to use small strips and smoothing out their forms as they work. They will be told that they will ha"e to ha"e a full two layers on their masks in the first day because the other classes will need to use them during the other days of the week. After the demo the students will work on making their mask designs. *ay 0: 'aper mache mask forms. $&ust get at least 0 layers done by the end of class% The beginning of class will start with a /uick re"iew of what happened last week1what did they students talk about and sketch $masks%. They will also talk about where their inspiration for the masks came from $#ati"e Americans% The students will then start working on their masks. The will first coat the mask mold with 2aseline $to make the paper mache cast pop off easier% and then write their names on a piece of masking tape that will go on the inside of the mold and then mo"ed to the inside of the mask when finished. nce they are ready they will start to paper mache on their masks. They will need to be reminded often that they need to co"er the entire mask and try to get as many layers onto the masks as they can. They will also need to bring the paper mache off the mask onto the boarder so that when we go back to take the mask off the mold it will come off with more ease. 3emind the students that they will need to use small sheets of newspaper to co"er the masks as opposed to giant strips and pieces of newspaper but they shouldn4t be using tiny pieces of paper. They will need to be gi"en announcement of how much time they ha"e left to work. If the students do finish co"ering their masks all the way tell them to add more layers ,more is always better. Tell them that if their masks are thin

then when we go to take the masks off the mold they are more prone to ripping. -hen the class is o"er the students will need to clean up the e5tra newspaper strips and put them into the bucket in the middle of the table, put their masks onto the table to dry, return all the paper mache paste bottles and wipe up an e5cess paste that are on the table cloths. They will need to fold the table cloths and then put them away in the proper places. *ay 6: Add more paper mache if needed or paint base layer onto mask form. The students will work on their paper mache masks again. This day will consist of painting. They will need to paint their initial base layer of paint making sure to co"er their entire masks. If possible the students will then begin painting on their designs and other adornments for their masks. *ay 7: 'aint on final designs1outlines n the final day the students will finish their masks. They will need to paint on their final designs and if they are ready they will outline their designs if they did not finish painting their designs out already then they will !ust lea"e them as it is.
