Scoutstartedtobeathimupduringthelunchhour.HehadnocluewhyScoutwasbeatinghimup. AnotherpartofstorythathadfearinitiswhenBurrisisyellingattheteacher.Hewasyellingather becauseshewastellinghimtobathe.Scoutisalsoafraidtogobacktoschoolbecausehegetsbeats whenhestartstoread. Therewasntmuchfearinthesethreechaptersuntiltheend,butattheverybeginningScoutdoesnt wanttogotoschoolbecausesheisscaredthatshemightgetbeatupifshekeepsreading.Shedoesnt wanttogotoschoolbecauseshefeelslikeitisslowingherdownandthatshewontlearnanything morethanwhatAtticusandUncleJackhavetaughther.Butthescariestpartofthethreechapterscame attheendwhenNathanRadleyfiredhisshotgunintheairtoscareoffJeminhisyard.Nathansaidhe firedattheblackmaninhisyardbutJemwastheoneonhisporch.TheblackmanwouldofbeenDill. TheyweretryingtoseeBooRadleythroughtheshutteroftheRadleyshousebuttheydidntsee anything.Theythenwenttothebackporchandtriedlookingthroughthedoororthewindowonthe side,butalltheysawwasNathan.Theyduckeddownandthenstartedrunning.Jem,Scout,andDill werescaredfortheirlifeastheyranoutthegateofthefenceanduptotheschoolyardfence.Iknew theywerescaredbecauseofhowtheytalkedbeforedoingtheplan,andIknewScoutwasreally scaredbecauseshedidntwanttogothroughwithit.Buttheboystalkedherintoitanditturnsoutthat theywereallscaredfortheirlife.Theylatercamebackdownfromtheschoolyardandtalkedtoallthe neighborsandaskedwhatwasgoingon,buttheyknewabouteverythingandtheyhadsomuchfearin theirbodiesthattheydidntevenwanttotalktoNathanRadley. Fearwasreallyabigpartforchapter8.Inchapter8,therewasafireatMrs.Maudieshouse. ScoutandJemwerebothfrightenedthattheirhousewasgoingtoburnandthattheyneededtostart gettingfurnituremovedout.Butluckilytheirhousedidntburndown.Theonlythingthathaddamage
wastheirsnowmanwasmelted.Mrs.Maudiehadnofearwhenherhousewasburningdownbecause sheneverwantedabighouse.Shealwayswantedasmallhousebecauseshewantedtogrowmore flowersoutside.ShedidnttakethehousefireveryseriouswhenJemandScoutwereaskingaboutit. Theboyshadnofearwhentheyweretakingtheobjectsoutofthetree.Theyfoundyarn,a knife,pennies,soap,andmanyotherthings.Theythoughtitwasverysuspiciousthatallthoseobjects wereinthetreebuttheytookthemoutandkeptthem.Theonlythingthatscaredthemwaswhenafter thefire.WhenScoutandJemgothome,theydiscoveredthatScouthadablanketwrappedaroundher. Theblanketdidntbelongtothem.ThetwoofthemstoodinfrontoftheRadleyhousewhileMrs. Maudieshousewasonfire.Thetwowereveryfreakedoutaboutthesituationandtheyratted everythingouttoAtticus.ButtheywerereallyscaredwhentheyalsofoundJemspantssewedtogether andfoldedreadyforhimupattheschoolyardfence. Scoutwasntscaredatallwhenshewasfightingforherfamily.WhenCecilwascallingher namesandwascallingAtticusnames,shehadnofeartostandupanddefendherfamilyandrights.She wasntgoingtofightanybodybecauseAtticustoldhernotto,butonceCecilandeverybodystarted callingherfamilynames,shefoughtthemandtaughtthemalesson.Shehasnofeartostandherground andfightforit.WhenChristmascamealong,FranciscalledAtticusinappropriatenamesandScout wasntgoingtofighthim,butoncehestartedrepeatingitconstantly,Scouthithimandtoldhimtostop. Scoutrippedskindowntoherbone,soitmustofbeenahardhit.EverybodyiscallingtheFinchs namesbecauseAtticusisdefendingablackmanincourt.Manypeoplefromthesouthduringthistime didntlikeblackpeoplesoifyouwereevercaughtwithonetheyweregoingtomakefunofyou.Scout andJemhavenofearbecausetheywanttodefendthemselvesbutAtticussaysthattheyshouldjust forgetaboutitandnotworryaboutanythingbecauseitsonlygoingtogetworsethanitalreadyis.
Inchapters15,16,and17,agroupofmobmemberscometoAtticusdoor.Theyareallstandingin thelawnasAtticusopensthedoor.HetellsScoutandJemtostayinsidewhilehetalkstothemoutside alone.ThegroupofmobmembersconsistedAtticusfriendsandtownspeopleheallknew.While Atticustalkedtothemthekidssatinthewindowandwatched.Calpurniatoldthemtogetawaybut theydidntlistenbecausetheywantedtoknowwhatwasgoingon.ScoutandJemsatthereinfearand triedtolisten.TheywerescaredbecausethemoblookedliketheywantedtokillAtticus,butwhen AtticusreturnedtothehouseScoutandJemaskedhimmanyquestions.ThemobtoldAtticusthatthey weremovingTomRobinsonbackthetownjailfromthecountyjail.Theytoldhimtoexpecttrouble. LaterthatnightAtticusleftthehousetogooutanddosomething.Theyfearedthatsomething waswrongbecauseAtticustookthecarthistimeandhenevertakesthecar.Scout,Jem,andDill followedhimdownthestreettoseewherehewasgoing.TurnsouthewasprotectingTomRobinson fromtheangrymobthatnight.OnceScout,Jem,andDillgotdowntothejail,fourcarscamerollingin. TheygotoutandwenttoAtticus.Heshowednofearinhisface.Thechildrenwerentgoingtositthere andwatchAtticusgetyelledat.Again,themoblookedliketheyweregoingtokillAtticus,butrather thanstandinginfearwatching,Scoutranuptothemobandtoldthemtobackoff.Shebroketheangry glancesgoingbackandforthbetweenthetwo.Shenoticedafamiliarfaceinthecrowd.ItwasMr. Cunningham.Shestartedtotalktohimandhelaterwalkedawayandsodidtheangrymob.Scout savedthewholeday,shegotthefearoutofbothAtticusandTomofbeingkilledthatnight. Inchapters18,19,and20AtticuswasintrialdefendingTomRobinsonforrapingMayella Ewell.AtticusshowednofearwhenhewasdefendingTomorwhenhewasgivinghistestimony.He knewexactlywhathewasdoing.Mayellawassoscaredattheonetimethatshebrokedowncrying, becauseshethoughtshewasbeingaskedtomanyquestionsandthatAtticuswasgoingtotearherapart
justlikehedidtoherfather.Atticuskeptaskingthesamequestionsoverandover,becausehethought maybehecouldgetadifferentansweroutofherratherthanthesameoneeverytime. Laterinthechapters,DillstartstobreakdowncryingbecausehewasscaredforTom Robinson.Mr.GilmerscrossexaminationwasmakingDillfeelbadabouthimself.Mr.Gilmerwas talkingtoTominareallyhatefulwayandDillcouldntstandit.HefeltbadforTom.Scouttookhim outsideandletDillrelax.TheytalkedtoLinkDeasbecausehegotthrownoutofthecourthousefor yelling.Allthekidshadfearinthemwhiletheywerewatchingthecase,butitonlygottoDill.Once ScoutgotDilltostopcrying,theywentbackinsidetohearAtticustestimonyandtoseeaspecial surprise. Inchapters21,22,and23theyfoundTomRobinsonguiltyforrapingMayellaEwell.Atticus triedhisbesttodefendTombuttherewastoomuchpowerforthewhitepeople.Tomsayshedidntdo anythingtohurtMayellabutMr.Gilmersayswhywouldherownfatherbeather.Tomsaidallthetruth hecouldpossiblysaybutitjustwasntenough.Hefearedhewouldeitherhavethedeathpenaltyor twentyyearsinprison. Duringthetrial,AtticusmadeMr.Ewelllookverybadwithalltheevidencehehad.Thenext morningafterAtticusgotbeat,Mr.Ewellmethimonthecorner.Mr.Ewellspatinhisfaceandcalled himinappropriatenames.Healsosaidhewouldgetrevengeonhimifittookhimtothedayhedied. JemandScoutheardaboutitlaterthatdayandwerescaredthatAtticusmightdie.Theyfearedthathe mightnotshowupathomeafterworksomeday.Theyevenfearedthattheirlivesmightend.They talkedtoAtticusabouttheeventsbutAtticusseemedverycalmaboutitandtoldthemnottoworry.He toldScoutandJemthathewasonlyangrybecausehegotmentallybeatduringthetrial.Hetoldthem thateverythingwillbealrightandthattheyshouldntfearanythingthatwillcomeinthefuture.
Fearisntusedmuchinchapters24,25,and26,buttherearesomecharacterswithfearinside them.JemandScouthavefearinsidethembecausetheydontknowwhatisgoingtohappentoAtticus. Atticusdoesntshowthatheisafraidbecauseheistryingtokeepthekidssafeandsothattheydont worryaboutanything.Atticusdoesntknowwhatgoingtohappentohim.BobEwellcouldkillhim, someoneelsecouldkillhim,orhemightgettransferredtoadifferenttownforlawyerbusiness.Jemand Scoutdontwhatgoingtohappen.AlsomanyotherpeopleintheneighborhoodarescaredforAtticus becauseagainMr.EwellcoulddosomethingoutofnowhereandhurtorkillAtticus. AlsointhesechaptersTomRobinsonwasshotandkilled.Atticustakesacoupleladiesand goesovertoHelenRobinsonshouseandtellsherthenews.Helenfallsdownbecausesheisso overwhelmedwiththenews.Helenisnowscaredforherlifeandherchildrenslivesbecauseofwhat happenedtoTom.AnythingcouldhappentothemandatanymomentbutAtticustellsthemtonotbe worried.Theyhaventdoneanythingsotheyhavenothingtobebotheredby.Fearhasenteredher bodybutIdontthinkitwillphaseher. Inchapters27and28,fearisusedalot.Whenthekidsarewalkingthroughthehouses backyardstheyhearsomenoisesinthebushes.AllsuddenBobEwelljumpsoutandattacksJemand Scout.ButoutofnowhereBooRadleycomesinandkillsBobEwellwithBobsownknife.Thekids areverygratefulandthankedBoo.HeckTatetoldAtticusthatBobwasdrunkandfellonhisownknife sonoonehadtogoontrial.Thekidswereveryscaredatthescenebecausetheydidntknowwhat wasgoingtohappentothembuttheygotoveritlaterthatnight. Inchapters29,30,31BooRadleycomesoutofhishouseandthechildrenandparentsloseall thefeartheyhadaboutBoo.Booisactuallyaniceguy.Peoplethoughthewasscaryandmeanbecause theyneversawhimcomeoutofhishouse,buthenevercameoutbecausehedidntwantto.Butthe
