Russias Birth
The first unified territory Russia would later become was created West of the Ural Mountains. These people were known as Rus, who were also Vikings. The first religion of this area was Catholic Orthodox.

Kiev becomes Orthodox


A Kievan noble visited Constantinople in 957 AD, being publicly converted to Christianity. When she returned to Kiev, she ruled until her son was old enough to rule. The son, Vladimir, resisted Christianity, and later turned the empire to Orthodox Christian.

The Slavs and Vikings


Slavs invited Chief Rurik to be their king in year 862AD, when he later founded Novgorod, which became Russias first important city. Later, Viking exploration would become more possible when Oleg moved the kingdom to Kiev, where they had access to rivers.

Kievs Rise to Power and his Decline


Vladimir led Kiew to more land and expanded its borders, defeating other nomadic groups. With the death of Vlads son, Yaroslav, Kiev began to decline. Yaroslavs sons tore apart the empire fighting for control, which was a large part of Kievs decline.

Mongols Invade Russia


Mongols invaded Russia in the 13th century AD. In doing so, the Mongols destroyed many Russian Cities, including Kiev. Mongols would rule Russia for the next 200 years thanks to the invasions.

Russia Breaks Free From the Mongols

Moscow was founded in 1100 AD. It was located near three rivers-the Volga, Dnieper, and Don. During the 1320s AD, Russian princes from Moscow gained power and loyalty with the Mongols, eventually gaining enough influence to break free from their rule.

The Russian Empire Emerges


Ivan III became prince of Moscow, later challenging the rule of the Mongols. During his 43 year reign, he took the name of czar and faced off against the Mongols himself. During his standoff with the Mongols Ivan III

Extra Facts
Ancient Russia is also known as Kievan Rus. Ancient Russia finally fell to the Mongols in 1240 AD. Kievan Rus translates to land of the Rus. Prior to Kievan Rus the Baltic Sea was predominantly populated by eastern Slavic tribes.
