Constantine Mavromihalis Science 6 November 14, 2013 PHOTOSYNTHEIES SUMMITIVE REPORT PROBLEM: If you double the distance of light,

will the rate of photosynthesis will decrease by half? HYPOTHESIS: If you double the distance of light, then photosynthesis with decrease by 50%. THEORY: Photosynthesis is where plants use energy from the sun to make food. The equation for photosynthesis is Water + Carbon Dioxide + Light Energy -> Glucose + Oxygen. 6H2O + 6CO2 + Light Energy -> C6H12O6 + 6O2. . In words six water molecules combine with six carbon dioxide molecules to produce one molecule of sugar and six molecules of oxygen. Photosynthesis occurs in plants, algae, and many other species of bacteria, but not in archaic. The gases enter through small tubes called the stomata. I think if you double the distance of light, then photosynthesis with decrease by fifty percent because energy forms the light is one of the most important things in photosynthesis. If you have more of what you need then if will happen faster, but is you has less of what you need then it will be slower. If you look at last years data, you will see that 5cm has more bubbles than 10cm. For example period one 5cm (which is closer) got 35.5 bubbles, at 10cm it got 7.6 bubbles. This shows that closer will increase the rate of photosynthesis. PROCEDURE: For Light Intensity 1. Measure and cut at an angle elodea 7 to 9 cm. 2. Remove a few leaves from end of stem and slightly crush end of stem. 3. Measure mass in grams and record. 4. Put elodea stem side up in a test tube softly. 5. Fill test tube with water and baking soda solution (1 tsp to 100 mL of water). 6. Put tube in rack and adjust lamp 2 textbooks (6.3) from top of test tube. 7. Turn on lamp and wait 1 minute. 8. After 1 minute, begin counting small, medium and large bubbles for 3 minutes. Record data. 9. Repeat at 4 textbooks (12.6) with same size and mass elodea 10. Repeat for Trial 2 DATA/OBSERVATIONS:

Conclusion: My lab group tested if the rate of photosynthesis and if it would increase or decrease due to the distance of light. I hypothesized that the rate of photosynthesis would decrease if the distance of light were farther. For photosynthesis to take place one of the ingredients it the energy from the sunlight (or light from another source). When the lamp was farther way the test tube that contained the Elodea, then the Elodea would not photosynthesize as much as if the lamp were close to the test tube. Analysis Examining the 2013 results there are some inconsistences in the data. Some of the numbers especially in period one did not add up. For example the average was 20% increase but period one said 50% increase or they had a decrease. Also when almost every ones was an increase some period had a decrease, or viseversa. Many of the groups had a few mistakes such as the things I listed above. Bibliography Coolidge-Stolz M.D., Elizabeth, et al. Focus On Life Science. Boston,
