PB0T0SYNTBESIS S0NNATIvE PR0}ECT

PR0BLEN: Bow uoes uoubling the amount of caibon uioxiue fiom .Sg of bisouium
caibonate uissolveu in 1uumL of watei to 1g. uissolveu in 1uumL of watei affect the
iate of photosynthesis in elouea.

BYP0TBESIS: If caibon uioxiue (by uoubling baking soua) is incieaseu, then the iate
of photosynthesis will be incieaseu by about Su%.

TBER0Y: Photosynthesis is a piocess that takes place only in plants. This chemical
ieaction cieates foou by captuiing light eneigy in the chloioplasts, anu taking watei
anu C02 fiom the ioots anu leaves. The piouucts of photosynthesis (02 anu glucose)
aie the ieactants in cellulai iespiiation. The piouucts of cellulai iespiiation (B20,
glucose, anu eneigy) aie also the ieactants of photosynthesis, so they aie almost
self-piopelleu piocesses!
Some examples to suppoit this fiom the 2u12 expeiiments aie that S out of
the 6 classes hau an inciease in oxygen piouuction when the amount of baking soua
was uoubleu, anu that the aveiage inciease in oxygen piouuction fiom u.Sg of
baking soua to 1g of baking soua was S1%.
I believe that my hypothesis is coiiect because, juuging by the 2u12 uata,
theie will be about a Su% inciease in oxygen piouuction uue to incieaseu
photosynthesis. I can infei that this is because of the incieaseu amount of caibon
uioxiue in the watei uue to the incieaseu amount of baking soua.

PR0CEB0RE F0R CARB0N BI0XIBE (BAKINu S0BA):
1. Neasuie anu cut at an angle elouea 7 to 9 cm.
2. Remove a few leaves fiom enu of stem anu slightly ciush enu of stem.
S. Neasuie mass in giams anu iecoiu.
4. Put elouea stem siue up in a test tube.
S. Fill test tube with watei anu baking soua solution (1 giam to 1uu mL of
watei).
6. Put tube in iack anu aujust lamp S cm fiom top of test tube.
7. Tuin on lamp anu wait 1 minute.
8. Aftei 1 minute, begin counting small, meuium anu laige bubbles foi S
minutes. Recoiu uata.
9. Repeat with .S giams anu 1uumL of watei.
1u. Repeat foi Tiial 2

C0NCL0SI0N: In this lab, my gioup testeu whethei oi not auuing 1g of baking soua
insteau of u.Sg of baking soua to 1uumL of watei woulu piouuce an inciease of
bubbles (oxygen piouuction) fiom the elouea that was submeigeu in the watei. I
hypothesizeu that inueeu auuing 1g of baking soua woulu piouuce an inciease in
oxygen piouuction. The aveiage inciease of oxygen foi oui gioup was 94.8% fiom
u.Sg to 1g of baking soua in S minutes. S out of the 6 classes (incluuing ouis) hau an
inciease in oxygen fiom u.Sg to 1g of baking soua, although not neaily as much as
oui class. S out of the 6 classes hau a ueciease in oxygen fiom u.Sg to 1g of baking
soua. The aveiage inciease of bubbles (oxygen) foi the 7
th
giaue is 21.2% fiom u.Sg
to 1g of baking soua. In conclusion, my hypothesis was coiiect Su% of the time that
theie woulu be an inciease of oxygen piouuction fiom u.Sg to 1g of baking soua in a
S minute peiiou, although I believeu theie woulu be less of an inciease than theie
actually was.

ANALYSIS: In the uata taken fiom the 2u1S expeiiments, theie aie some
uisciepancies. An example of one of the uisciepancies is peiiou 7's oxygen inciease
of 94.8% in a S minute peiiou fiom u.Sg to 1g of baking soua being a lot highei than
any of the othei classes incieases. Anothei inconsistency is peiiou 1's aveiages
being veiy high compaieu to the othei classes with 1u8 bubbles at u.Sg anu 1S9
bubbles at 1g. This is S9.2% highei than the u.Sg aveiage anu S9.7% highei than the
1g aveiage.
Ny opinion is that the iesults of the expeiiment weie inconsistent because
uiffeient people might have hau uiffeient opinions on what sizes the oxygen bubbles
weie. The counteis hau to ueteimine the sizes of the bubbles anu may have
ueteimineu the size uiffeiently, affecting the outcome of theii expeiiment anu
theiefoie the whole aveiage. Anothei ieason theie weie uisciepancies in the uata

was because the test tubes weie put unuei uiffeient lamps, which coulu have
uiffeient outputs.
I believe that the test coulu be maue moie consistent by having 0NE peison
count ALL the bubbles foi ALL the classes as to make suie the bubbles aie not
counteu impiopeily. Also, the same mouel lamps anu light bulbs shoulu be useu to
ensuie consistency. 0ne moie thing that I woulu change is that the weight of the
elouea shoulu be iecoiueu.
