English-language TV programmes in Romania

Introduction The purpose of this report is to evaluate the popularity of English-language television programmes in Romania. It takes into account the influence on local culture and some recommendations regarding changes that could be made in order to increase the popularity of national television programmes. Popularity of international programmes Statistics have shown that programmes like merican Idol! " #actor! $ouse %d! &esperate $ousewives have rapidetely grown in popularity. $aving a larger budget than our local televisions! people are more likely to watch imported programmes rather than national ones because they are more spectacular and international stars might be included in their casts. 'ot only do this programmes represent a source of entertainment but also an educational one. &ue to the fact that the ma(ority of the movies are subtitled! people and especially children can easily learn English. The influence on local culture The popularity of English programmes has resulted in the struggeling of the locally made programmes to compete with the top )* worldwide programmes. In order to succeed with a limited budget local televisions fre+uently copies famous merican programmes in order to increase the audiences. $owever! a positive effect we can mention is that Romanians are creative and have the sense of humor so they can succeed in any situation. Recommendations I would recommend the government to encourage and to support locally made programmes to present and to promote the Romanian traditions and historical places.
