English-language TV

Programmes in my country

Introduction

The purpose of this report is to outline the popularity of the imported

English-language television programmes in my country and to detail the
effects that are visible in the local culture and language.

In demand programmes and why are they so popular

In Romania there is not a variety of imported programmes from

English-speaking contries, although we can find an assemblage of news
programmes, cartoons and even documentaries. BBC is a very well
known and appreciated news broadcast channel popular in non-native
English contries for its complex structure and efficiently methods of
sharing information. Cartoons are also well liked owing to the fact that
parents want their children to accumulate information at this young
age about English and being able to reproduce it easier when mature.

Effects on the local culture

The popularity of English-language programmes developed due to the

budget they posses which resulted in winning the competition with the
local programmes. As a consequence, the population developed a well
bilingual vocabulary in specially the younger generations who tend to
communicate in both tongues when having a conversation or in the
online environment. However this developed the mindset of many
individuals, making them process information in very diverse methods.
Recommended changes

I would suggest that the government should raise the budget for the
local television so as to encourage television companies to improve the
quality of the programmes. As a result, this will reduce the reliance on
English-language tv programmes and will promote the local ones
values.
