Science (Applied Single)

About the course


This course will provide you with a vocational A Level qualication, which aims to develop your scientic skills, knowledge and understanding and apply these to a scientic setting. You will explore how science is used by organisations and within different industries, as well as exploring the social, economic, environmental and ethical impact that science has on society. This challenging course covers in-depth aspects in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and through practical challenges you will consider risk assessments for hazardous procedures and coursework development to demonstrate your knowledge of energy transfer and efciency. Furthermore, elementary ideas about image formation in a medical context are also examined through investigating the monitoring of human organs. You will also be required to conduct an exciting extended study as a research scientist; investigate different organic chemical compounds and their impact in medicine and industry. Principles involved in the use of electromagnetic waves in the modern world will also be examined.

How will I be assessed?


Each qualication (AS and A2) is assessed by external examination, in the summer term and through coursework which is internally marked and externally moderated.

Additional minimum entry requirements:


C in GCSE Additional Science or Merit in BTEC Science.

Is this course for me?


Motivation and independent study are key for success, due to the nature of assessment of some units studied. If you are interested in pursuing a career as a Nurse, Midwife, Laboratory Technician, Paramedic or Biomedical Scientist then this course is for you. It provides an excellent foundation for progression to science-based careers.

Where can it take me?


Students who have successfully completed this course have gone on to study and pursue careers in Nursing, Biomedical Sciences, Radiography, Sport Sceince and Occupational Therapy. 31
