Philosophy and Ethics

About the course


The study of Philosophy and Ethics involves exploring the big questions about life and the universe. It focuses on the decisions made by people everyday, and how we approach solving dilemmas. The subject covers a wide range of topics, from attempting to answer the question Why does God allow evil and suffering to be a feature in our world? to a variety of applied ethics such as sexuality, crime and punishment, war and peace, and medical ethics such as euthanasia and abortion. The AS course introduces students to the foundations of Philosophy and Ethics, covering key areas such as the philosophical arguments surrounding the existence of God and the study of ethical concepts and dilemmas. You will also focus on investigating closely the area of medical ethics. At A2, you will continue to develop your understanding of key philosophical arguments and build upon your knowledge of ethics, considering the various issues surrounding ethics.

How will I be assessed?


All AS and A2 units are assessed by external examinations, in the summer terms.

Additional minimum entry requirements:


C in GCSE RE/IS (Full/Short Course) and C in GCSE English at Higher Tier or English Language.

Is this course for me?


Philosophy and Ethics is suitable for anyone who enjoys a lively debate. It doesnt matter what your personal beliefs are, but having an open mind is essential. Alongside this, good written and communication skills, research, problem solving and teamwork abilities are needed to be successful on this course.

Where can it take me?


The course provides a foundation for the study of Theology, Philosophy and Ethics at degree level. It is also a valuable choice for those who are considering the Medical Profession, Social Work or Teaching because this course includes the study of Theoretical and Applied Ethics. It analyses people and their behaviour. Some of our previous students have pursued careers in Teaching, Journalism, Law and Television Production.
