Mathematics Art & Design and Further Maths

About the course

Mathematics is the abstract science of number, quantity and space. A Level Mathematics is a fascinating subject that requires a mature and dedicated mind, and someone who is enthusiastic about studying all aspects of the subject. It can be demanding at times, both in terms of complexity of the problems to be solved and in the volume of content that is to be covered. As such, you will require an ability to manipulate the material you studied at GCSE. Pure Mathematics (known more recently as Core Mathematics) comprises of the traditional areas of calculus, algebra, geometry and trigonometry and will develop, challenge and stretch your mathematical skills. Applied modules will cover either Mechanics, Statistics or Decision Mathematics, with the aim to give you a choice in which modules to study. These will be decided once the course has begun. How will I be assessed? All units will be externally assessed by external examinations, in the summer terms. You will sit three equally weighted exams each year.

Additional minimum entry requirements:

B in GCSE Mathematics at Higher Tier.

Further Mathematics
For a small number of students who are passionate about the subject and who also have considerable ability, the option of studying Further Mathematics is possible. The subject is very demanding but is potentially very satisfying, as well as being an extremely worthwhile qualication for any potential engineer.
