English Literature

About the course


Studying English Literature at A Level will introduce you to an incredible world of poetry, prose and drama. You will be given the opportunity to explore some of the most revered texts throughout history, as well as crucial and sometimes controversial contemporary writing. Literature students are always challenged to see beyond the words on the page, and to develop a critical appreciation of the writing they study. At AS, you will be introduced to the rigours of literary study, exploring the fascinating theme of Identity in a wide variety of texts, alongside considering the contexts in which the texts were produced. The A2 course will build upon these skills, continuing with a thematic study of Love Through the Ages across a variety of challenging and thought-provoking texts. In addition, there is a comparative coursework assignment which includes the study of one of Shakespeares most famous plays.

How will I be assessed?


Assessment at AS Level Unit 1 is assessed by external examination, in the summer term. Unit 2 is assessed through coursework that is internally marked and externally moderated. Assessment at A Level Unit 3 is assessed by external examination, in the summer term and Unit 4 is assessed through coursework that is internally marked and externally moderated.

B in GCSE English Language and Literature.

Previous students who have successfully completed this course have gone on to study Literature at degree level and its related courses, such as English Language, as well as American Studies, Drama and Education. 18
