INTRODUCTION
Reliability means the ability of an apparatus, machine, or system to consistently perform its intended or required function or mission, on demand and without degradation or failure

Reliability may be defined in the following ways:

The idea that an item is fit for a purpose with respect to time The capacity of a designed, produced or maintained item to perform as required over time The capacity of a population of designed, produced or maintained items to perform as required over specified time The resistance to failure of an item over time The probability of an item to perform a required function under stated conditions for a specified period of time The durability of an object.

INTRODUCTION (CONT..)
Reliability engineering is engineering that emphasizes dependability in the lifecycle management of a product. Dependability, or reliability, describes the ability of a system or component to function under stated conditions for a specified period of time. Reliability engineering is a sub-discipline within systems engineering. Reliability is theoretically defined as the probability of failure, the frequency of failures, or in terms of availability, a probability derived from reliability and maintainability. Maintainability and maintenance may be defined as a part of reliability engineering. Reliability plays a key role in cost-effectiveness of systems.

OBJECTIVE
Knowledge of the equipment life cycle is important because it provides a basis for understanding how and where reliability engineering enters into the process of designing, producing, and operating the equipment. The equipment life cycle is broken into distinct phases, each representing a unique portion of the equipment life. These phases provide the framework for tracking reliability throughout the life cycle of the equipment and guidance on when and where to apply resources. Awareness of life cycle costs help equipment owners understand the impact on expenditures and cost of ownership when reliability is initiated at different life cycle phases.

OBJECTIVE (CONT..)
The reliability improvement process provides a means for systematically improving reliability throughout the equipment life cycle. Optimal benefits are realized when reliability is designed into a piece of equipment. However, it is important to improve reliability throughout the life of the equipment to meet reliability goals and objectives. The reliability improvement process is an iterative process of setting goals, then evaluating(predicting), comparing, and improving those goals. Central to the reliability improvement process is data collection and analysis; design improvements; and operations and maintenance procedure improvements

RELIABILITY APPROACH
The Reliability Approach is simply a systematic approach to keeping the plant running in an efficient , profitable manner. Many line supervisors and hourly personnel probably think of The Reliability Approach as another way of saying "Preventive/Predictive Maintenance [PPM]," such as oiling machines, checking for hot bearing sand stopping the machine just before it breaks. Maintenance alone cannot overcome design or operating deficiencies, it can only react to the result of these problems such as breakdowns, or loss of bearings, turbine wheels, or heat exchanger tubes. The Reliability Approach can overcome these because it is a concept of integrating the human being , equipment and the process into an efficient system that performs for the optimum benefit of all concerned.

RELIABILITY APPROACH (CONT..)

We must learn to ask "How are we going to keep it running?" Not, "How are we going to keep it from breaking down?" We must equate our operation with the team that goes all out to win, as opposed to the team which struggles to keep from losing. This winning concept in plant operations, can predict trends and trouble spots with specific approaches created to deal with potential problems before they ever surface. Primary failures, such as an overheated bearing or a pitted heat exchanger tube, will be detected and corrective actions taken before secondary failures, such as loss of shafts or wheels, or rupture of heat exchanger tubes, can occur.

RELIABILITY APPROACH (CONT..)

So where do line supervisors come in? Right where it all happens! Management can decide to install reliability systems, engineers can be employed to design such systems, but it's only the line supervisors and their people who can make it work. They control the day-to-day operations of the system in their particular areas and they are in the best position to observe the system in operation, to note any deviations, and to take immediate action and communicate their findings and corrective suggestions to their supervisor. Line Supervisors are also in a vital position to contribute to formation and success of this approach in their plant.

WORK TILL NOW

We have got confirmation letter from BPCL for doing external project They allotted an external guide for us for doing the project in there. His name is Satheesh M.V The topic suggested by the guide is Reliability of the machinery Now we are doing literature study about this topic
