INSTRUCTION PLAN To be completed by student teacher before observation

REFLECTION To be completed after observation. May be completed by student teacher and cooperating teacher or by the student teacher alone.

1. LEARNING GOALS/OBJECTIVES What student outcomes/objectives do you have for this lesson? Describe scenarios that require special effects technicians to use mathematics and algebraic reasoning in lighting and highspeed photography. Identify a strategy and create a model for problem solving Solve real-life mathematical problems involving the area of a circle. How do your outcomes relate to the Local/State Curriculum Model(s)? Algebra Overview Seeing Structure in Expressions o A.SSE.1a, 1b, 2 Interpret the structure of expressions. o A.SSE.3a, 3b Write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems. A.APR.1 Perform arithmetic operations on polynomials. Creating Equations o A.CED.2, 4 Create equations that describe numbers or relationships. Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities o A.REI.1 Understand solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning. Represent and solve equations and inequalities graphically o A.REI.10 Understand that the graph of an equation in two variables is the set of all its solutions plotted in the coordinate plane, often forming a curve (which could be a line).
o

How will you group students for instruction? No groups for today. Students will sit in rows.

The students who cannot hear very well, low visual ability, ELS or struggling students I will place in the front of the classroom so that they can see the projector and the videos well.

4. METHODS How will you 1) activate background knowledge, 2) make connections, and/or 3) introduce the lesson?

What instructional methods will you use?

___ Constructions ___ Library research _x_ Cooperative learning ___ Peer editing ___ Discussion/questioning ___ Practicum Practice/drill ___ Problem solving ___ Field Study ___ Reflection/response ___ Graphic organizers ___ Independent learning ___ Role playing ___ Laboratory ___ Interactive Lecture ___ Viewing/Listening/Answering ___ Other________________________ _x_ Inquiry _x_ Discovery ___ ___ Experiment ___ Reporting ___ Journal ___ Simulation

Why did you choose these methods? I feel that students learn best when they get a chance to discover mathematics. I feel that it is easiest to do this in the beginning of a lesson when the student can just explore and dive into a new topic without much prior knowledge. What activities/applications did you plan? Activity
Discussion: Talk about special effects and lighting. i.e. ask if they have used a camera or taken a video Where have they seen special effect visuals? Where have they used it? What may need to be considered in terms of lighting?

Time Allocated
10 minutes

Brainstorm: Explain to the students that the next few lessons will focus on the use of math in special effects. Ask the students to brainstorm how they think mathematics might be used in a filming a video Show this video twice:

10 minutes

the first time just let the students watch the clip. Then ask the students to watch for the math that the gentleman in the clip uses in his work and write down their observations as they watch the video. Give the students some time at the end of the clip to finish writing down their observations and to finish reflecting. (15 minutes)

How will you bring the lesson to closure?

Have the students share their observations by either verbally. Make sure the students are writing down what the other students are saying so that the next day they can come back to these observations. (10 minutes)

5. MATERIALS What instructional materials will you use? For the class: Computer, projection screen, and speakers (for class viewing of online/downloaded video segments) Paper/pencil How will you infuse technology into the lesson?
Technology used:

___ Cassettes ___ Overhead ___ Slides ___ Tape recorder ___ VCR/TV graphing calculator

___ CD ROM ___ DVD X_ Computer ___ Smart Board ___ Distance learning ___ Digital camcorder _X_ Internet _ Other ___ Digital camera ___Projector, speakers, ___ Other_______________

6. EVALUATION How do you plan to evaluate student outcomes (see checklist)? Why are you evaluating in this manner? The students just got introduced to the lesson. They cannot be assessed in a written manner yet, but by questioning the students, letting the students have discussions and observing what the students have written down I will know if the students are engaged and understanding where the lesson is going.

Assessment alternatives: ___ Application exam ___ Objective test ___ Quantitative Scales ___ Concept mapping ___ Observation ___ Rating scales ___ Parent evaluation ___ Contract ___ Rubric ___ Peer evaluation ___ Checklist _x_ Questioning ___ Self-evaluation ___ Performance _x_ Journals ___ Inventories ___ Portfolio ___ Problem-solving ___ Other _________________________________ assessment Put a for assessments reflecting process and an x for those that reflect products.
