1 Centrifugal force = Strategy

CENTRIFUGATION

2013/14

Laboratoy and commercial centrifuge require same centrifugal force to achieve the same performance.

Thus,

Laboratory R=200/2=100 mm i.e. 0.1m =50 rev/s2=314.2 rad/s Commercial R=0.9/2=0.45 m ??

Speed = 148/2 23.6 Hz

Terminal settling velocity for particle in a fluid under gravity

Solving

b. TARGET: Calculate the settling velocity under gravity (Vg depends on particle size, hence particle size can be calculated if we know Vg)

Since for streamline conditions:

CENTRIFUGATION

STRATEGY: 1. Need to calculate the time for smallest particles to settle out (This is the residence time). 2. Then from the volume of slurry contained in the bowl we determine the maximum feed rate that will have this minimum residence time. BASIC CENTRIFUGE EQUATION (for streamline conditions)

Volume of slurry in the bowl:

The maximum feed rate to achieve the required settling is: 0.0353/19.2=0.00184 or 6.62
