Thirty years ago. a young doctor sat by a desperately ill baby on her death bed. T h e parents were fran tically begging for help, ever)- treatm ent failing to aid. T h e parents becam e grief-stricken to the point of death. 1 am the doctor who had that experience. T h i s experience created a desire in my m ind to know why people are b o rn and why nature allows such a great difference between m em bers of the h u man race. T h e hu n ger for knowledge drove m e to laboratories and libraries for the answerb u t I am still searching and determ ined to know .

T h e s e are the words of a prom in en t physician. U n intentionally, he has spoken for m illions of men and women who today harbor the same thoughts. T h is i n e q u a l i t y o f m a n is apparent to most of us. You know persons who are radiant with health from birth and seemingly im m u n e to disease. Y ou know others whose lives are preyed upon by num erous a il ments which rob them not only of enjoym ents but of simple comforts. Also, there are those m en and women whose every plan becomes a successful ven ture. Each enterprise they en ter turns into a golden op p ortu n ity as if they had the touch of the fabled K ing Midas. A rou nd them, however, a m u ltitu de of u nfortunate beings live and struggle. W h a t makes one m an m ore successful than a n other? Is it training in just o n e l i n e ? You know that is not true! You cann ot make a good businessman out of a youth who lias been taught n othing more than buying and selling. You cannot m ake a good physician out of a m an or woman who has been taught only the principles included in the restricted four years in medical college. T h e r e appears to be

some u n k n o w n e l e m e n t which some seem to possess, or have discovered. In your youth, y o u feared things which you later cam e to recognize as harmless and really useful. In your days of developing observation, you were puzzled by the unknown elem ents in life. It seemed to you that there were m ore elem ents of the u n known than o f ihe known. 11 is always the unknow n in every days activities that causes us worry, concern, perplexity, and even suffering. In years since your youth, you have be come well acquainted with things once unknown. T od ay , you k n o w them ; you can see them, sense them, p r e p a r e f o r t h e m ; it is a power no one can take from you. B u t even now, are you fully pre pared to meet all of the obstacles of life, to sweep them aside or surm ount them easily? If not, begin now to investigate further the still unknown ele ments of your existencethe my st eri es that make for the inequalities between men. Real knowledge by m an a b o u t man is, today, the greatest power any m an can possess.

THE THOROUGHFARE OF LIFE


L e t us begin with existence as we know it. Life is a thoroughfare upon which we find ourselves travel ers. B ehind us is our im m ediate begin n in gbirth. It is a vast eternity. Ahead of us is still another inevitable vast eternityd e a t h . It is a mystery which either instills fear or is accepted with understandingde pending upon the experiences we have along this course of life. W e did not ask for this life; yet we could not have refused it. How, then, shall we react to it? W h at shall we do with

this period of consciousness which the years afford us? Many m en and women resign themselves to the in fluences of their environm ent. T h e y allow th em selves to be drawn or impelled along this causeway of life. T h e y are like balls of snow, rolling at a furious rate of speed down the side of a great m ou n tain . O ne m om ent, they are free, out in the open, encou ntering few or no obstacles, and they are unconcerned. T h e next m om ent, they have collided with unanticipated events and happenings. T h e y are at a loss to avoid these conditions or to rise above them. T h u s they travel through the years, sometimes wondering if the vicissitudes of life, the bitterness, the pains, are worth the price, worth the occasional pleasures and snatches of peace of m ind which come their way.

W HY ARE WE HERE?
Certainly, at some tim e you must have asked your self as you looked back upon your past activities and likewise contem plated your future: Is this haphaz ard existence my destiny? W h y a r e w e here ?" Also, is there a m other who has never gazed down on the inn ocen t babe nestled in her anus and wondered: W hat does this span of existence hold for h im ?" Is it noi lim e that h u m an ity ceases plunging into lire u n k n o w n along this thoroughfare of life, hoping to grasp the skirts of passing opportunity? W ou ld life not be entirely different for vou if Jvou could control J your moods? If you could form desirable habits and break those not desired: if you could know how to see in the events happening about vou the trends of tomorrow, woidd you not be more assured and con fident in the strength of such knowledge? I f you knew how to develop your will power sufficiently to m eet the demands upon you and to make the right decision, would not many of your troubles, the result of indecision, disappear? If you could reach into a dependable source and produce helpful, construc

tive, intelligent ideas at a tim e when an im portant thought, a useful plan, meant the difference between discouragem ent and achievem ent, would you not feel equal to any circumstance? Certainly, such a life would be far superior in its advantages.

DOES FATE CONTROL US?


Do not be deceived by some inadequate philoso phy. M illions of hum ans try to excuse their perp lexi ty or helplessness during this earthly span by saying to themselves and others that they are dependent upon the d e c r e e s o f f a t e . T h e s e fatalists proclaim that infinite powers have predestined their every act and it is useless for them to intervene. T h e fatalist, by such a belief, denies his power to reason, his will, and faculty o f choice. Yet these very faculties are evi dences of m a n s true relationship to the universal powers about him . T h e power of thought and the attrib u te o f decision argue against the notion that we are mere puppets, with every act along this span of life ordained for us in advance. It is true that there are universal forces over which we have no control. W e cannot change the inherent stru ctu re of the universe itself nor the causes that b rin g its forces into plav. B u t w e can ha rn es s the se f o r c e s ! W e can attune ourselves with them, and we can a lter or control their ultim ate effect upon us. M an can enjoy a great deal m ore mastership over his en v iron m en t than he presently does. H e can arrange the affairs of his life so that he can use the forces of life as an ally. L ik e a sailor turnin g his sails to the wind, like a generator directing the flow of electrici ty, or like n u clear fission heating water for power, m an can harness the other forces of his existence. T h i s is not a religious qu estion; it is a philosophical question, o n e that c o n c e r n s y o u a n d y o u r life. Success in life means m a s t e r s h i p , and mastership means utilizing every in n er force and power of the

being, as well as every oute r force. Man's creative abilities do not rest in the m uscular strength of his body, nor in his fertile im agination. H e must be able to bring his mental imaging into m a t e r i a l e x p r e s s i o n daily, hourly. T o do this, he must be able to use o t h e r f a c u l t i e s than simple visualization. F u rth e r more, he must use these powers according to the purpose for which they were intended.

A BLUEPRINT OF LIVING
Since we are part of an orderly universe, with its majestic and im m u tab le laws, a b o v e a n d b e l o w , then there also exists for m an, as part of this great cosmic scheme, a true purpose in life. By knowing this p u r pose, by relating it to his existence each day, man discovers himself. H e becomes the rightful master of his d om in ion this worldand relegates suffering, misery, and ignorance to their proper placesand apart from himself. Certainly, you have instinctively felt that there was more to life than you have already experienced. Let us assure you that there is a tr ue b l u e p r i n t o f living. Even those occurrences which have been painful to us are part of a chain of causes which can be made useful if we understand them. T h o s e who continuously suffer m isfortunes and whose lives are not as progressive or inspiring as they would want them can experience m arked changes when this cos mic b lu ep rin t is followed. Did you ever stop to think why you do the things you do? Is it not of ten because you had no alternativeb e cause there seemed n othing else to do, and you took the chance that it m ight

CREATIVE FORCES WITHIN YOU


W ith in m an there are constructive creative forces always at work and always attuned with the creative forces of the Cosmic. T h e s e forces must repair the damage done to the body, overcom e the strains and stresses upon the m en tal system, and guide the in decision of m a n s m ind in the right direction. From the natural forces operating throughout the universe, certain harm onic vibrations, ethereal energies, and vitalizing powers affect m a n s being and change the nature of his physical body or react upon his m ental efficiency. T h u s m an is hourly a com plex being, in fluenced by forces and potent principles of a serious and im portant nature. Several thousand years ago in Anu C C rtl cient Egypt, man first began his in vestigation of those mysteries which surrounded him . T h e first and most stupendous dis covery he made was t h e du a li t y o f self. H e learned that in addition to his physical body, with its limbs and organs, there was some ethereal nature or ele m ent oE his being. M a n then became, for the first time, truly self-conscious, or rather conscious of th e g r e a t e r i n n e r self. W h e n c e cam e this ethereal essence of his nature or s e l f f It could not be affected by that which pained the bodyby heat, cold, or hunger. It could be active, t h i n k and. c o n c e i v e , while the body was at rest or even asleep. Moreover, what would happen to it at the end of lifeor death? W as it indestructible? Did it sur vive? W ith such questions as these confou nding the minds of the early Egyptians a n d yet in t r i g u i n g t h e m , m an began a search that has never ceased on the part of intelligent m en and women everywhere. iii living things. In the regular journey of the silvery specks or planets, and the appar ent path of the sun across the heavens, m en discerned the infallibility of nature and the suggestion of a great universal order pervad ing all things. All of this heightened their inquisitiveness.

THE ANCIENT WISDOM SCHOOLS


W h a t was m a n s relation to the heavens and the earth? Did these forces affect his daily affairs and the cycle of his existence? T h e s e fu rther questions, like great spades, served m an to dig beneath the surface of his own consciousness. Since as rem ote a period as 5000 B .C ., c er ta in m e n a n d w o m e n have sincerely and without fear or p reju d ice not only probed in to the earth or scanned the heavens above, but have investi gated the mysteries of their m i n d s and selves. T h e y formed themselves into arcane or mystery s c h o o l s for the acqu isition and study of such knowledgeand for the mastery o f life.

M u ch of the startling wisdom they acquired was reduced by them to w riting on stone tablets and papyrus rollsb u t the greatest portion was secretly conveyed from one to another by w o r d o j m o n t h . Sir E.A. W allis Budge, renowned Egyptologist, in one of his learned works, relates with respect to these mystery schools: T h e r e must have been a progres sive developm ent in the mysteries and it seems as if some of them were entirely unknow n under the old kingdom. It is impossible to doubt that there were H e w h o kn o w s m o , , mysteries in the Egyptian rites, and this bein g so. it grieves m ost for w asted js impossible to think that the highest order of the cZliD )m l( < A R"sl K h eri-H ebs (Masters) did not possess esoteric (in ner) knowledge which they guarded with the greatest care. Each, if I read the evidence correctly, possessed a gnosis, a superiority of know ledge which they

never put into writing, and so were enabled to e n large or diminish its scope as circumstances made it necessary. It is, therefore, absurd to expect to find in Egyptian papyri descriptions of the secrets which formed the esoteric knowledge of the K h eri-H e b s. T h e disclosures of these ancient investigators are astounding even to the scientific world today. T h e eternal truths they unveiledthe facts, the hitherto unknown laws of naturemade them masters of fear and liberated them from the undependable ele ments of so-called chance and luck. W hat they were able to accomplish in their lives, to do for friends and members of their families, how they were able to utilize nature's forces to do their bidding were the cause of the legends that have com e down to us today about the a n c i e n t m i r a c l e w o r k e r s . T o the u n i n i t i a t e d , to those still steeped in ignorance who were dwelling in darkness and doubt, these sages and mys tics seemed to be p erform in g miracles. T o those of the mystery schools who knew, these demonstrations were not magical processes but rath er t h e s i m p l e a p p l i c a t i o n o f a k n o w l e d g e by which man can direct the laws of nature and the faculties of his own being. THE SUPPRESSED KNOWLEDGE

R o m a n E m p ero r Ju s tin ia n was one of these. H e was a misguided religious zealot who issued an edict in the Sixth C entury seeking to abolish all the mystery schools. H e considered the men and women who had acquired personal power and confidence in th em selves from the unusual knowledge they had discov ered a m enace to the orthodox and often supersti tious dogmas which he wished to promote. T h u s it became necessary that this wisdom be s e c r e t e d and kept for the i n q u i r i n g , c o u r a g e o u s j e w out of the multitudes. T h i s amazing knowledge, which secret b ro th er hoods have preserved, is available today to the seeker for personal achievem ent and the mastery of life. It exists f o r y o u for everyone with an open mind. Its efficacy, its great power, can be applied to the affairs of your life with startling beneficial results.

STRANGE EXPERIENCES
L e t us face facts. Y ou r life is influenced by many inexplicable thingsphenom ena and happenings that you som etimes can not qu ite explain or over come. You may call them u n ca n n y . Perhaps you seek to push them into the background of your conscious ness. Y ou may even laugh about them to others. Nevertheless, they are often the direct or indirect factors in preventing you from realizing some ideal, som ething you are seeking to attain or accom plish, or from freein g yourself of worry and strife. dislike for th em would sweep over you. W hy? It is a manifestation of t h e h u m a n a u r a an invisible, mag netic radiation from the hum an body which we can detect. It eith er repels or attractsand it is scientifi cally demonstrable. T h i s em anation also has a most practical my s tic al p o w e r which was known for cen turies to the students of the mystery schools, to the sages and adepts of old. Have you ever entered a room that depressed you? T h e room, perhaps in a home, hotel, or office building, m ight have been clean, orderly, and even attractively furnished; yet while in it you were u n able to accomplish your best work or feel at ease. Do you know that intense em otional outbursts, hatred, jealousy, and anger ca n and d o affect m aterial su b stances so that every room in which they occur takes on a depressing environm ent? T h e s e a r e not s u p e r st iti ons not suppositionsb u t the effects of littleknown natural laws around us. Obviously, u nder standing them, as do those who have this esoteric knowledge, makes for t h e ma st ery o f s u c h c i r c u m stances.

USING YOUR INTUITION


You have often had the experience of an i n t u it i v e im p r e s s i o n , a hu n ch or idea that was most e n lig h ten ing but seemed to com e from nowhere. T h e R osicru cian traditions which have come down by word of m outh, and those which are so often related in literary reference works, tell how the O r der had its b irth as one of the mystery schools of secret wisdom in ancient Egypt during the 18th Dy nasty, or the reign of Pharaoh A kh naton, about 1350 B .C . Its f a s c i n a t i n g s y m b o l i s m and rituals relate it definitely to the illu m in atin g wisdom of the sages of Egypt and the great centers of learning of the ancient lands of the East. T h e s e legends also recou n t how its adepts, its great masters and teachers, imparted some of their wisdom to the builders of K ing Solom on's magnifi cent and symbolic temple. M any tomes, rare books, and docum ents of several centuries ago, reposing in the archives of the Rosicru cian O rder in this country and in Europe, describe its early spread from the O rien t to E u rop e in ancient times, and the great in fluence it had upon the minds of men and women thirsty for knowledge.

THE WESTERN W ORLD ROSICRUCIANS


T h e Rosicrucians first came to America and to the W estern world in 1694. U n d er the leadership of Jo h a n n Kelpius, a M aster of one of the R osicrucian Lodges of Europe, a small band of m em bers who sought f r e e d o m o f t h i n k i n g and of speech and the right to search for truth wherever it m ight be found, desired the liberty of the new land to the west. T h e y were inspired to make their journey by a book w rit ten by the renowned English philosopher and states man, Sir Francis Bacon. T h e y landed in what is now the great city of Philadelphia. T h e i r descendants built a colony at E p hrata, Pennsylvania, and there they constructed the first astronomical observatory in Am erica and the W estern world, also the first paper mill. T h e y organized the first A m erican sym phony orchestra and deve loped the first botanical gardens. T h e ir later leaders and m embers actively p artici pated in the fo u n d in g o f the United States of Am erica as a nation.

FEES AND DUES


T h e O rder is strictly a brotherhood, operating in that sense as do other fraternities. M em bership in the Rosicrucian O rder carries with it the many benefits distinct to all fr a t e r n i t i e s and many others that are u n i q u e . As in fraternities, there are m em bership dues, payable m onthly, and a nom inal registration fee. T h is fee and m onthly dues of small am ou n t are the donations on the part of m em bers to the general operating funds of the O rder, and take care of its e x tension expenses, its b u ild in g funds, national and in ternational hu m an itarian activities, and donations to scientific expeditions and methods of research and investigation. In addition to these general activities of the Order, the R osicrucians conduct the courses m entioned on previous pages. T h e s e courses of study are given f r e e ly and without charge or fees of any kind to members of the O rder. Therefore, we wish you to keep in m ind that the study and instruction work is a sepa rate and distinct feature of the O rder, n o t f o u n d in any o t h e r f r a t e r n a l o r g a n i z a t i o n , and for which, in reality, our m em bers do not pay. ( T h e R osicrucian Order, A M O R C , is registered throughout the world as a n o n p r o f i t o r g a n i z a t i o n .)
