Language Arts
The fifth graders are finishing a Literary Opinion essay, where students describe an opinion they have about how a character in a book changed over time Our ne!t writing genre will be nonfiction "e are going to brainstorm about our #spark$ to help decide what topic we should research %n reading, our focus will be on test&taking strategies 'pecifically, we will discuss how to respond to our reading

Social Studies
The first North (merican settlements and )* +nglish colonies are what we will be studying in 'ocial 'tudies this month The students will research the settlements and colonies in order to learn about their leaders and what life what like during the ),--s and ).--s "e will analy/e how the colonies were alike and different

Mathematics
This month, students will continue their study of fractions "e will e!amine methods for adding and subtracting fractions with both like and unlike denominators 'tudents will solve real world problems using fractions

Science
The fifth graders will study 'imple 0achines Through the observation and testing of different materials and ob1ects, they will determine how machines work and how they improve our lives
