5 Skip Count Lesson Plan Grade Level: 2nd Topic: Math- Skip Count by 5 Rational: Skip counting by 5 is the foundation for numbers and operations in base 10. Objective: Students will be able to find the number value of their name using skip counting by 5 strategy. Common Core Standards: 2.NBT.2 Count within 1000; skip- count by 5s 10s and 100s Focus/Review: Class will watch Schoolhouse Rock - Ready or not, Here I Come! (Fives) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3pb73onvK8 Teacher Input: Today we are going to figure out how much your name adds up to by counting each letter by 5. Each letter in the alphabet is worth 5 points. The teacher will write his/ her name on the board, and put 5s under each letter. Example: SHEILA VAZQUEZ 555555 5555555 Guided Practice: Now we are going to count the letters in my name by 5s. Teacher points at each letter in his/her name as the class counts by 5s out loud. Independent Practice: Students will write their first and last name on a sentence strips. Then they will assign the value of 5 to each of the letters in their name. Using the strategy of skip count by 5, the student will find the total value of their name. The student will show their work and explain how they got their answer.

Closure: Class will gather together on the carpet and while the teacher points out the letters in the alphabet the students will count each letter by 5s. Evaluation/assessment of Student Learning: Students will pass in their names with its total value to the teacher as an exit ticket. The teacher will evaluate the exit ticket. If students will be evaluated on giving each letter 5 points and getting the total correct. If the students get 95% correct they understand how to skip count. (5pts for giving each letter a value of 5. 5points for getting the correct total value.) Materials/Technology: Whiteboard / Blackboard 100s chart (students can us if they need help skip counting) Base 10 blocks (students can us if they need help skip counting) Pencils Paper

Plans for Individual Differences: Early finishers: Have slips of paper with other names/ item names that students will find the value of by using 5 skip counts. Visual Learners/Kinesthetic learners: Have 100s charts and base 10 blocks available for use. Students with writing difficulties: Have slips of paper already printed out with the students name, square pieces of paper with 5 on each that they can put under the letters in their names instead of writing them. 8 mathematical practices you included and how: Use appropriate tools strategically: o Students will be able to use base 10 blocks if they wish to solve the equation. Look for and make use of structure: o Students will be using skip 5 count strategy to find the value of their name. Attend to precision: o Students have to explain their work.
