Timeline of the start of La Liga Filipina until the execution of the 13 Martyrs of Cavite

1892- July 3- Jose Rizal founds the La Liga Filipina (Philippine League) in Tondo, Manila
- Aims: 1) union of the Archipelago
2) mutual protection in all cases of pressing necessity
3) defense against all violence and injustice
4) encouragement of all education, agriculture, and commerce
5) study and application of reforms

- July 7- Andres Bonifacio, Teodoro Plata, Deodato Arellano, and other patriots

Bayan in Tondo, Manila because Bonifacio believed in violent revolution
- Aims: 1) unite the Filipinos
2) Philippine independence
- July 14- Rizal is exiled to Dapitan, Mindanao
- collapse of La Liga Filipina
- conservative Liga members form the Los Compromisarios to fund the Propaganda
Movement
1895- April 10- Bonifacio and his companions hold a secret meeting in the Cave of
Bernardo Carpio (Pamitinan Cave)
- first cry of Philippine independence, “Viva la Independencia Filipina!”
written on the cave wall by writer Aurelio Tolentino
- November 15- last issue of La Solidaridad due to lack of funds and end of the
Propaganda Movement
1896- Katipunan reaches around 20,000 members
- Katipunan flag is made (red flag with letters K.K.K.)
- January- first issue of the Katipunan’s newspaper, Kalayaan, printed by Faustino
Duque and Ulpinao Fernandez and founded by Emilio Jacinto
- May- a delegate of Katipunan members, headed by Jacinto and Bonifacio, meet
with a Japanese naval officer and consul and get their aid and alliance
- June- Dr. Pio Valenzuela fails to secure Rizal’s support of the Katipunan’s
plan for his rescue
- July-August- Spanish authorities discover the Katipunan, which leads to the
Philippine Revolution
- August- Supreme Council of the Katipunan is formed on the eve of the revolution

leader and leads a successful military revolt in Kawit
- Mariano Alvarez liberates Noveleta
- September- Spanish reign of terror to stop the revolution

captures the Spanish garrison in San Isirdo, but evacuates it four
days later due to Spanish reinforcements

11- “Thirteen Martyrs of Bagumbayan” shot to death by a firing squad
in Bagumbayan, Manila
- March 23- execution of the “Nineteen Martyrs of Aklan” in Kalibo, Aklan
- exile of 1,000 patriots saved from the firing squads to Guam, Fernando Po in
Africa, and other Spanish colonies
