Road: Source #3 Summary In his essay Everything Uncoupled from its Shoring: Quandaries of Epistemology and Ethics in The Road, Donovan Gwinner highlights the role that the ambiguity of knowledge plays in Cormac McCarthys The Road. He explains the uncertainties that lie in the encounters that the father and his son experience, while trying to maintain a sense of goodness throughout the novel, and how they bring into question how muchor how littlethe characters are aware of themselves and their situations. Gwinner claims that [t]o know and not knowis a central quandary for the two main characters and goes on to explain that such obscurities thus places readers in the position of knowing and not knowing what to make of an apparently hopeful resolution that cannot fully overcome the pervasive images and declarations of dissolution and hellish desolation (Gwinner).
