Assignment #3
Due: 5PM, Wednesday September 25, 2013
Assignments are due on the date indicated by 5:00 pm in the course dropbox. Absolutely no late
assignments will be graded. A mark of zero will be recorded in this case. Include a signed cover page
with your work, or it will not be graded.
To obtain maximum marks your answer should be in a form that another student could understand without
undue eort: a poorly expressed solution is not sucient even if the result is correct. Proofread your
assignment before you submit it. Use complete sentences and show your work.
The problems at the end of the chapters in Brown and Churchill are excellent training. If you want to
master the material, I recommend that you attempt a minimum of 3 questions from each chapter.
1. For each of the following sets, determine the accumulation points. Prove your assertion using the
denition of accumulation point.
(a) {z : |z| = 1}
(b) {a
i,:
: : Z, 0 < :}
(c) {a
ij
: j Q, 1 < j < 1}
2. Prove that the complement of a closed set is open. (That is, if C is closed, prove that C\ is
open. )
3. Use the denition of a limit to prove the following:
(a) lim
zz
0
(z z
0
)| (z) = 0 if, and only if || (z)| is bounded on some neighbourhood of z
0
;
(b) If lim
zz
0
| (z) = u
0
, then lim
zz
0
|| (z)| = |u
0
|.
Hint: Use the following consequence of the triangle inequality: ||c| |||| |c ||.
(c) lim
zi
1
zi
=
Hint: Use the denition of -neighbourhood of to prove this.
4. Derive an expression for the derivative of z
:
, when : is a positive integer from the limit denition
of derivative using the binomial formula.
5. For the following functions, determine an expression for the derivative or prove that it does not exist:
(a) | (z) = z
(b) | (z) = arg(z)
