Assignment #5
Due: 5PM, Wednesday October 9, 2013
Assignments are due on the date indicated by 5:00 pm in the course dropbox. Absolutely no late
assignments will be graded. A mark of zero will be recorded in this case. Include a signed cover page
with your work, or it will not be graded.
To obtain maximum marks your answer should be in a form that another student could understand without
undue eort: a poorly expressed solution is not sucient even if the result is correct. Proofread your
assignment before you submit it. Use complete sentences and show your work.
The problems at the end of the chapters in Brown and Churchill are excellent training. If you want to
master the material, I recommend that you attempt a minimum of 3 questions from each chapter.
1. Suppose v(x, j) is a harmonic conjugate of (x, j) and also that (x, j) is a harmonic conjugate
of v(x, j). Prove that and v must both be constant functions.
2. Determine constants c, | R such that x
2
+cx +|j +j
2
is the real part of an analytic function
for some domain, or prove that no such constants exist.
3. Find all values of z such that exp(2z i) = 1.
4. Give two dierent proofs that | (z) = exp(z
2
i) is entire, and nd its derivative.
5. Compute log(

3 + 2i) and Log(

3 + 2i).
6. Determine the domain of analyticity for the following functions
(a) PV(z 3)
i
(b) PVi
z3
7. Determine the image of the annulus dened by 1 < |z| < a under Log(z).
8. Prove that ln(x
2
+j
2
) is harmonic in every domain that does not contain the origin by (1) appealing
to the denition of a harmonic function; and (2) writing it as either the real or complex part of an
analytic function.
9. Show that if z = 0 and c is a real number then |z
c
| = |z|
c
. Here, take the principal value of |z|
c
.
