FIFTH GENERATION (PRESENT AND BEYOND)

Defining the fifth generation of computers is difficult.

The most famous example of a fifth generation computer is the fictional HAL9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey. HAL performed all of the functions currently envisioned for reallife fifth generation computers. With artificial intelligence, HAL could reason well enough to hold conversations with its human operators, use visual input, and learn from its own experiences. What will the future bring? How will voice recognition, spoken output, artificial intelligence, expert systems affect our world? Can computers be made to think? The man who founded Intel, the chip manufacturer, Gordon Moore, created Moore's Law: put in very simple terms, it says that the processing power of computers will double every 18 months. Can this carry on forever?
