1. Consider an infinite cylindrical surface S of unit radius whose axis is the z-axis, placed in air. a) State Gauss' law of electrostatics. Suppose that S has a uniform unit surface charge density placed on it. Calculate the electric field inside and outside S. b) State Ampere's law of magnetostatics. Suppose that S has a uniform unit modulus surface current density flowing on it in the positive z-direction. Calculate the magnetic flux density inside and outside S. [10] 2. Suppose an infinite line charge of uniform unit charge density is placed in air parallel to the y-axis and passing through the point (0,0,1) in standard Cartesian coordinates (x,y,z), above a perfectly conducting region . Use the method of images to calculate the resulting electric field and charge density throughout all space. [10] 3. Two planar slabs of equal thickness but with different dielectric constants are shown in the figure below. The electric field in air makes an angle of 30 with the z-axis. Calculate the angle that the electric field makes with the z-axis in each of the two dielectric layers. [You may assume that the surface charge density at the boundaries between layers is zero.]
