Blank and Kidwell [l] have proposed a mechanism for the external contamination of hair by the combined action of exogenous drugs and sweat which yields hair specimens that purportedly cannot be distinguished from those of active drug users by our truncated wash kinetic procedure - one of several tests used by us for distinguishing between endogenous and exogenous drugs. Drugs initially deposited on hair as powders or vapors are envisaged by the proposed mechanism to be carried by sweat into deeper-lying hair structures. Blank and Kidwell claim to have evaluated this hypothesis by experiments which involved soaking hair for 1 h with shaking in concentrated solutions of drugs at 37C. From these experiments involving severe contamination conditions, and in some instances the faulty application of our truncated wash kinetic procedure which they inappropriately modified, Blank and Kidwell concluded that external contamination of hair by drugs of abuse may make the interpretation of forensic results problematical. They further concluded that additional evidence, both replicating and extending [their] findings, needs to be generated before hair analysis can be established as a valid forensic tool. We agree with Blank and Kidwell as well as others that sweat can be a contributing factor in the external contamination of hair by drugs, but we strongly disagree with their conclusion that their experiments with significantly modified procedures have in any way demonstrated that the influence of sweat confounds our
