WINDERMERE
MEDIA
CENTER
Online Safety for Our Kids by Mrs. Hastings
These days many of our kids can
be f ound i n front of screens- -
televisions, tablets, phones, and
laptops. They visit YouTube, log in to
Minecraft and feed their virtual pets.
I don t know about you, but
sometimes I feel like I cant keep
track of all the things my son is
consuming.
Last year t eachers, medi a
specialists and school counselors
began introducing online citizenship
lessons to help our students know
how to be safe online.
We have advised students to talk
to parents about sites they want to
visit, to keep passwords private and
to guard their personal information
from others. In older grades weve
di s c us s ed t he c hal l enges of
communicating effectively with text
because the tone can be misread.
We ve al so addressed onl i ne
bul l yi ng and have ext ended
classroom expectations of respect
and kindness to virtual locations.
The curriculum we are using can
be found on CommonSense Media.
(www.commonsensemedi a.com).
This site has excellent resources for
parents, too.
There are reviews for video
games, apps, movies and websites.
You can f i nd suggest i ons f or
screening YouTube videos and other
websites. There are ideas for
determining the media diet that
makes the most sense for your family.
Lastly, the site provides excellent
advice about how to talk about
advertising, body image and news
events with your children.
This year I am excited to be
hosting Reading Conferences with
students in grades 3-5 an effort to
help them find that one special book
t hat wi l l get t hem hooked on
reading.
Students fill out a reading survey
and tell me about their favorite book
and movie and the traits they look
for in a good book. I ask their
teacher for a reading level and then
work to find 3-4 books that I think
they will love.
We meet and I show them the
books I chose and why. Most
students leave with something they
are excited about. I love getting to
know them as readers and look
forward to introducing them to new
titles they might not have found on
their own.
Celebrate Your Childs Birthday With a Book...
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050D4BA5AC2CA46-birthday
View our list of needed titles and purchase one for the media center from bookseller.
You bring the book to school and we will present it to your student on their birthday (and they will be the first person to check it
out). Inscribe the book with a special note to commemorate their special day. Sign up today or closer to their birthday.
