ENG234 - TUTORIAL EXERCISES - Set 2 The tutorials for this unit will come from two sources.

There are problems taken directly from the text book. The reference CB 03.53 would mean problem 3.53 from chapter 3 of the set textbook. The information given in the textbook is reprinted in the tutorials for your convenience. Other problems will give full details. 1. [CB 2.6C]. What is mechanical energy? How does it differ from thermal energy? What are the forms of energy in a fluid stream. 2. [CB 2.16]. Two sites are being considered for wind-power generation. In the first site the wind blows steadily at 7.0 m/s for 3000 hours per year. in the second site the wind blows at 10.0 m/s for 2000 hours per year. Determine the best site for windpower production assuming the wind velocity is negligible at other times. [Hint: Note that the mass flow rate of air is proportional to the wind velocity]. 3. [CB 2.25C]. The length of a spring can be changed by (a) applying a force to it or (b) changing its temperature (i.e. thermal expansion). What type of energy interaction between the system and its surroundings is required to change the length of the spring in these two ways. 4. [CB 2.36]. A steel rod of 0.50 cm diameter and 10.0 m length is stretched 3.0 2 cm. The Youngs modulus for this steel rod is 21.0 kN/cm . How much work, in kJ, is required to stretch this rod? 5. [CB 2.41]. A damaged 1200 kg car is being towed by a truck. In the following problems you may neglect friction, air drag, and rolling resistance. (a) Determine the extra power needed for constant velocity motion of 50.0 km/Hr on a flat road. (b) Determine the extra power needed for constant velocity motion of 50.0 km/Hr on a road 30o. (c) Determine the extra power needed to accelerate the car at constant acceleration from 0 to 90 km/hr in 12.0 s. 6. [CB 2.47]. A thermally insulted closed system is raised 100 m at a location where g = 9.80 m/s2. Determine the energy change of this system in kJ/kg. 7. [CB 2.53]. Consider a room that is initially at the outdoor temperature of 20 oC. The room contains a 100 W light bulb, a 110 W TV set, a 200 W refrigerator, and a 1000 W iron. The room is thermally isolated from its surroundings. Determine the rate of increase of the energy content of the room when all these devices have been turned on.

8. [CB 2.99]. The inner and outer surfaces of a 0.50 cm thick 2.0 2.0 m window o o pane are 10 C and 3 C respectively. (a) Determine the heat loss, in kJ over a period of 5.0 hours if the thermal conductivity of glass is 0.78 W/m2. (b) What would your answer be if the glass were 1.0 cm thick? ANSWERS

2. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Energy (site 2)/Energy(site 1) = 0.5145. W = 18.55 J (a) P = 0 0.98 kJ/kg 1410 W (a) 7.86107 J (b) heat loss would be halved (b) 8.17104 W (c) 31.25 kW
