Unit-wise Course Outcome

Thermodynamics (ME 301)

Unit I Student will be able to Identify the unique vocabulary associated with thermodynamics through the precise definition of basic concepts to form a sound foundation for the development of the principles of thermodynamics. Students should be able to calculate the work done for the various processes in thermodynamics

Unit II

To be able to state the first law of thermodynamics and to define heat, work, thermal efficiency and the difference between various forms of energy To be able to apply the steady flow energy equation or the first law of thermodynamics to a system of thermodynamic components such as: nozzle, diffuser, turbine, pumps, boiler etc., and to estimate required balances of heat, work or energy flow.

Unit III To be able to explain the phase change phenomena in pure substances like water. To be able to illustrate the P-v, T-v, and P-T property diagrams and P-v-T surfaces of pure substances. To demonstrate the procedures for determining thermodynamic properties of pure substances from tables of property data.

Unit IV To be able to apply the second law of thermodynamics to cycles and cyclic devices. To be able to determine the expressions for the thermal efficiencies and coefficients of performance for reversible heat engines, heat pumps, and refrigerators.

Unit V To be able to define a new property called entropy to quantify the second-law effects. To be able to calculate the entropy changes that take place during processes for pure substances, incompressible substances, and ideal gases. To be able to apply the entropy balance to various systems. To be able to define exergy, which is the maximum useful work that could be obtained from the system at a given state in a specified environment.
