Tutorial 1 - Equilibrium of rigid bodies

Date: 2nd August 2013 Due: 8th August 2013

NOTE : Please come prepared to the class to solve any one of these problems.

1. The blades of a portable fan generate a thrust, T of 5 N as shown in Fig 1. Compute the moment M of this force about the rear support point O. For comparison, determine the
0

moment about O due to the weight of the motor-fan unit AB, whose weight of 45 N acts at G. 2. A space shuttle orbiter is subjected to thrusts from five of the engines of its reaction control system. Four of the thrusts are shown in Fig.2. The fifth is an 850 N upward thrust at the right rear, symmetric to the 850 N thrust shown on the left rear. Compute the moment of these forces about point G.

3. If neither the pin at A nor the roller at B can support a load no greater than 6 kN, determine the maximum intensity of the distributed load w, (units: kN/m), so that failure of a support does not occur. (In Fig.3; a= 3m; b =3m). 4. Determine the equivalent resultant force of the distributed loading and its location, measured from point A. Evaluate the integrals (how ?). (In Fig.4 above, C1 = 5; C2 = 16; a = 3 m ; b = 1m).

5. Draw the free-body diagram for the beam shown in Fig.5, which is pin-connected at A and rocker-supported at B. Obtain the support reactions (a = 8 m, b = 4 m; c =5m; F = 500 N; M = 800 N-m) 6. A man attempts to support the load of boards having a weight W and a center of gravity at G (Fig.6). If he is standing on a smooth floor, determine the smallest angle at which he can hold them up in the position shown. Neglect his weight (a = 0.15m, b = 0.9m; c = d = 1.2m).

7. Determine the tension in cables BD and CD and the x, y, z components of reaction at the balland-socket joint at A. (In Fig.7, F = 300 N; a = 3.0m ; b = 1.0m ; c = 0.5m ; d = 1.5m ).
