Edgar Allan Poe-The Tell Tale Heart

Context Edgar Allan Poe is a new unit for this class. They have had an introduction to his work in seventh grade, but this unit will be much more in depth. During this unit, they will read The Tell Tale Heart, Annabel Lee, The Fall of the House of Usher, and possibly a few other poems by Poe. Objectives The students will be able to work in groups to analyze and explain on a crime scene report what happened in The Tell Tale Heart. The students will be able to listen and fill in the blanks in a note sheet about Poes life. Standards Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with relevant evidence, sound valid reasoning, and well-chosen details; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation. Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to supporting ideas; provide an objective summary of the text. Procedures 1. Class will start with an introduction to the life of Edgar Allan Poe with a note worksheet. The students will have a sheet with the notes on it but will have to listen to be able to fill in the blanks. (Note sheet attached) 2. After the notes are done, the students will listen to a reading of The Tell Tale Heart and read along in their textbooks. 3. After the story is over, they will get into their detective groups and fill out a crime scene report. (Crime scene report attached)

Assessment Formative: By circulating around the room throughout the lesson, I will be checking to make sure the students are paying attention as well as if they have any questions. Summative: The crime scene report worksheet will collected and graded. Reflection I think this lesson went well. The students worked together in groups to complete a crime report. They analyzed the story by answering the questions on the report. By working together they were able to help each other to understand the story. Students were explaining to and teaching other students. The lesson was a little out of order because I didnt have any copies when I got there so I had to start the lesson with listening to the story then jump back to the notes before the students could work on the worksheet. But for the most part, it ran smoothly and the students seemed to enjoy the story and the crime scene report worksheet. If I could change anything I would want to give the students more time to complete the worksheet. I would also put the students in smaller groups. The groups they were in were formed for another assignment, but smaller groups would have worked better for this assignment.
