Brief overview - Excavation began in the 18th century and has ever since then.

. The cities of Vesuvius have gain recognition as invaluable soruces of infroamtion about the roman wolrd in the 1st century ad. The mthods used by srvhalogits to investigate pomepeii and Herculaneum have changed over time due to newly developed tehnologiws ans ewawECH. Today pomepii and hercalnluem are facing challenges that threathen their very existence, e.g. tourism. Although roman cities, poempii and Herculaneum were greatly infuleunced by near greek and Egyptian cultures.

A source-based study- This will inolve investigation of a wide range of archaeological and written sources to determine what they revral about these ancient cities. Sources of th information on the eruption range from written accounts by plinny the younfer in letters to the histrou tacitus, to the findings of modern vulcanologists. - Using the remains of poempeii and hercaluam, will provide an understanding of the economic, social and political sturctures of the cities. - We will consider the limitations of the remains avalivale to us and asses them all for their reliablilty and usefulness Historical overview: Pompeii Geographical context the physical environment: the geographical setting, natural features and resources of Pompeii and Herculaneum plans and streetscapes of Pompeii and Herculaneum
