BCSP Notes
Three black college products that starred in the NFL Claude Humphrey of Tennessee State, Aeneas Williams of Southern and Michael Strahan of Texas Southern have added their names to the HBCU greats honored with selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. "Imagine three guys from Division I-AA, historically black colleges going into the Hall of Fame in the same year," Williams said, referring to himself, Humphrey and Strahan. "Thats amazing, isnt it? "We're blessed. Thank you, God." Humphrey, Williams and Strahan will be part of seven new members of the 2014 class joining Andre Reed, Walter Jones, Ray Guy and Derrick Brooks as the newest immortals headed for enshrinement in Canton, Ohio. Humphrey and Guy were Veterans Committee candidates. Their selection brings to 30 the number of black college players enshrined in the Hall (see STAT CORNER II). The Hall of Fame doors finally opened for Humphrey, selected by the Atlanta Falcons with the third overall pick in the 1968 draft, on his 28th year of eligibility and his fifth as a finalist. The durable six-time Pro Bowl pick and ferocious pass rusher had 122 career sacks in 14 seasons with the Falcons and Eagles, who acquired him after a brief retirement in the 1978 season. His 14 1/2 sacks in 1980 helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl. Humphrey joins fellow TSU pass rusher and defensive end extraordinaire Richard Dent in the Hall. Williams, a walk-on at Southern, was a third-round pick of the thenPhoenix Cardinals in 1991. After winning the NFLPA Defensive Rookie of the Year Award, he became known as a shutdown cornerback over 14 NFL seasons, the first 10 with the Cardinals and the last four with the St. Louis Rams. He had 55 career interceptions, nine he returned for touchdowns and getting at least one in every season except his last. He had five or more

picks in six seasons, with nine being his best in 1994. He was named to the NFLs All-Decade team of the 1990s. He was elected to the Pro Bowl eight times at both cornerback and then safety, where he finished his career during his final four-season stint with the Rams. Williams shared the NFL record for longest fumble return with a 104-yarder for a touchdown against Washington in 2000, his last year with the Cardinals. Williams, now a pastor in St. Louis, joins fellow cornerback Mel Blount as Southern Jaguars in the Hall. Strahan is fifth on the NFLs career sack list with a Giants-record 141.5 and he owns the league's single-season sack record with 22.5 in 2001. He was a four-time first-team All-Pro (1997, 1998, 2001 and 2003), the 2001 NFL AP Defensive Player of the Year and a seven-time Pro Bowler. Only four Giants were selected to more Pro Bowls and all are Hall of Famers: linebackers Lawrence Taylor (10) and Harry Carson (9), offensive tackle Rosie Brown (9) and cornerback Emlen Tunnell (8). Three of the Giants' long list of Hall of Famers - Brown (Morgan State), Carson (South Carolina State and Strahan (Texas Southern) are from the black college ranks. Strahan is the first selection ever from TSU. Strahan is now a noted television personality serving as co-host of Live with Kelly and Michael and Fox NFL Sunday.
