Marshall D. Stern Named Winner of 2006 Corbin


Companion Animal Biology Award

Savoy, IL - Marshall D. Stern was named the 2006 recipient of the Corbin
Companion Animal Biology Award. The Corbin Companion Animal Biology
Award, sponsored by The Iams Company, was designed to recognize and
stimulate research and teaching excellence in companion animal biology. Stern
chose to accept the award at the American Society of Animal Science awards
program on July 10, 2006, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Stern is responsible for developing the new Companion Animal Biology


curriculum in the animal science major at the University of Minnesota and serves
as the coordinator of this program. He teaches courses in companion animal
nutrition and care, principles of animal nutrition, and ruminant nutrition, and is a
strong proponent of interactive learning. Stern advises 30 undergraduates per
year, mostly with an interest in companion animal biology, and has advised
several senior research theses to completion, investigating protein nutrition of
geriatric dogs, and adult cats and dogs at maintenance. He is faculty chair for the
Minnesota FFA Companion Animal competition. Stern has been described by
undergraduates as an “awesome teacher and mentor.” His excellence in
teaching has been recognized with various teaching awards, including
Distinguished Teacher by the College of Agricultural Food and Environmental
Sciences (COAFES); Distinguished Faculty Member by the COAFES Alumni
Society; Outstanding Teacher, COAFES Student Board; and the Teaching Award
of Merit from the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture. In 2006,
Stern was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers and received
the highly prestigious Morse Alumni Award for Undergraduate Education at the
University of Minnesota. Because of his outstanding efforts in teaching, advising,
and curriculum development, Stern is the recipient of the Corbin Award in
Companion Animal Biology.
