Settlement History

-Iroquois people migrate from the Midwest to the Finger Lakes, and their Confederacy is founded -Indian trails are firmly established, generally along SR 5 & 20 and SR 17 corridors -Canoe transportation begins along river corridors and on lakes -Native American agriculture is born -The Canandaigua Treaty establishes agreement between Iroquois Nation and the new US Nation

Fish Culture
(200 Years)
-Erie Canal is built bringing commerce & trade -Wildlife is obliterated through hunting and nuisance killings -Forests are cleared for agriculture -Return of forest, habitat and wildlife

- Rev. William Warner Bostwick plants the first grapevines in the Finger Lakes -Andrew Reisinger, a vinedresser from Germany, plants a vineyard and introduces pruning and training to the Finger Lakes -Charles Fournier introduces French-American hybrid grapes to New York -Marvin Sands founds Canandaigua Industries Co. becoming the largest wine producer outside California -The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail becomes the first to be organized in the United States -The Seneca Lake Wine Trail is formed to attract visitors.
