Types of Redox Reactions

Large number of reactions is redox reaction. Example; combustion corrosion electrolysis chemical cell displacement of metal displacement of halogen transfer of electros and many more Neutralization is not redox reaction. Why? Precipitation is not redox reaction. Why?

Neutralization is not redox reaction. Why?

Sample answer;
The neutralization process is a reaction bet een acid and al!ali to produce salt and ater. The acid solution contains hydrogen ions" #$ hile al!ali solution contains hydroxide ions" %#&. The ionic e'uation for neutralization process is;

#$ $ %#& #(%
The oxidation number of hydrogen ion" #$ in acid solutions is same ith the oxidation number of hydrogen ion" #$ in ater" hich is $). The oxidation number for hydrogen in this reaction remain unchanged. The oxidation number for oxide ions" %(& in hydroxide ion" %#& or al!ali is same ith the oxidation number of oxide ions" %(& in ater" hich is &(.

The oxidation number for oxygen in this reaction remain unchanged. *ince the oxidation number is not changed" it sho s that there is no oxidation and reduction occur during the reactions. Thus" the neutralization is not the redox reactions.

Precipitation is not redox reaction. Why?

*ample an er +nsoluble salt is prepared through precipitation , double bond decomposition process. Example of insoluble salt is argentums chloride" -g.l salt. This salt can produce through reaction bet een argentums nitrate solution" -gN%/ and potassium chloride solution. The chemical e'uation for the reaction is; -gN%/ $ 0.l -g.l $ 0N%/ The ionic e'uation for precipitation of argentum chloride is;

-g$ $

.l&

-g.l
