Eight telecom companies are expected to bid aggressively in the auction starting today though the intensity level may not be as much as it was when the Government sold 3G airwaves in 2010. The Government had then earned nearly Rs 70,000 crore selling 3G spectrum in an auction that lasted for more than a month. Analysts estimate that the bid amount this time is likely to be around Rs 55,000 crore. The current spectrum auction is different from the earlier sale in a number of respects. The quantum of spectrum coming up for auction is much higher than in 2010. The Government is selling in excess of 400 MHz of spectrum in the 1800 MHz band and another 46 MHz in the 900 MHz band.

We expect bidding to be rational in the upcoming spectrum auction given the financial state of the sector and availability of sufficient spectrum in the auction, said a report from UBS Securities Pte Ltd. The most important factor in this auction will be how Reliance Jio bids. The company had won broadband spectrum in the 2300 MHz band in 2010 but has not been able to launch services yet due to inefficiencies associated with the particular frequency band. If RJio does bid for 900 MHz then the competition could hot up as incumbent players Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular will try to retain their existing ownership.
