Pausing for commas: Students will highlight the commas and practice reading the poem while pausing at the commas (as opposed to stopping at periods). Then, students will highlight the ellipses in a different color and practice pausing with suspense at the ellipses. Visualizing: Students will draw a picture of the scene described in the poem within the box provided. Number words: Students will highlight the number words (one, two, and five).

Rhyme: Students will highlight the rhyming words. Highlight pressed and rest in yellow and talk about how these words are spelled differently, but when we say them they sound the same. In pink, highlight stop and POP. Questioning/Making inferences: What happened when the pod went POP? What does going POP mean in the poem?
