Quality of education: just as good. Proximity: wider choice in the neighbourhood. Cost: free, public transport, save money. Cultural and socio-economic diversity. Less strict rules: no uniform required, Others.

DIALOGUE 4:

DESKTOP OR LAPTOP

Your current computer has matured to the ripe old age of 8 months and has been deemed obsolete. Now its time for you and your partner to buy a new one and with all this new technology on the market, its difficult to make a decision. After giving it much thought, you feel that a laptop would be the right choice for the following reasons:

Portability, weight and size. Connectivity: wireless networks available for free in some areas. Youve found a very cheap one on-line. Lack of space in the house. The new ones are really cute. You just need it for work, so performance is not important.

You have a five-year-old daughter. You are doing your best to raise your child, and you are moderately strict. The problem is your own parent (your daughter's grandparent), who lives with you. He/she is always spoiling your child. You remember that your parent was much stricter with YOU when you were a child! You want this to stop, and you will now complain to your parent. Here are some examples of the behaviour that upsets you:

Not telling her off when she misbehaves. Giving her too many sweets. Allowing her to leave her meals half-eaten. Letting her watch too much TV. Buying her too many toys. Allowing her to stay up as late as she likes.

The money given is not enough for everything you have in mind though, so you two have to decide on the best 4 improvements from your lists. These are your suggestions:

Purchasing new computers for a new WIFI Internet connection. Expanding the already-existing range of sports facilities. Organising a number of cultural day-trips to nearby towns and camping weekends. More books for the mini-library. Acquiring musical instruments. Spending all the money. Others.

DIALOGUE 7: AN UNFORGETTABLE HOLIDAY

You and your friend are planning to go on a well-deserved 2-week holiday this summer. A friend of yours who lives in New York has invited you over several times but youve always turned him down. Now, you feel its the right time to go to the USA and enjoy an unforgettable holiday. The idea is to spend 10 days in New York and 5 in Miami. Try and convince your friend with this:

You can stay at your friends apartment next to Central Park. Things to do in the City (shopping, shows, sights, celebrities, nightlife). The Big Apple is a melting pot: youll get to know people from different cultures. American English is more widespread. Beach holiday in Miami staying in an expensive, luxurious, waterfront villa. Problems youll find in Scotland (the rain, the accent, driving is stressful).

DIALOGUE 8:

TO SMOKE OR NOT TO SMOKE, THATS THE QUESTION

The town council is thinking of banning smoking in all the pubs and restaurants in your town. Although you are a non-smoker yourself, you believe it would have terrible consequences for the restaurant you run. You represent the local Association of Pub and Restaurant Owners at the public meeting to discuss the councils proposals. Here are some ideas to support your position:

Loss of customers. The role of tobacco vending machines. You will have wasted the money to create a smoke-free area in your restaurant last year. How about the managements right to admission? Concerned the 3-month-trial period proposed by the town council will give way to a permanent bill. Spain is different!
