Chairmans Chat
Hello everyone,
April has been a very busy month for me as your Chairman. I have attended 2 Group Centenary Celebrations - one
at lunchtime and the other in the evening - both very enjoyable. I have visited 3 WIs as well as attended the East
Yorkshire Federation Council Meeting, and helped at two successful workshops. It has been lovely to talk to so
many members of the WI, drink endless cups of tea and eat more meals!
So, I have just returned from a few days away of relaxation and sightseeing in Jersey; before gearing up for a week
away in London.
After ballots, spreadsheets, planning buses, numerous phone calls, the time for the Royal Garden Party has
arrived. We have filled all tickets allocated to the Federation. It is a great shame that some people have been
disappointed and have not been able to go at the last minute. Buses will leave North Yorkshire at the crack of
dawn on June 2nd for what I hope will be a day to remember at The Palace.
The following day, 2 buses will leave North Yorkshire for the Annual Meeting at the Royal Albert Hall, again in the
presence of Royalty; how wonderful it will be to be there and experience it first-hand. I hope those of you who are
going to the live screenings around the Federation will have an equally exciting day. Thank you to all who have
organised the screenings a first of this type of event for us. Please send in your memories of the day and photos
for the Newsletter so that we can all see what your day was like.
Delegates please remember to go to your link WIs, if you can, with your report of the Annual Meeting, so that
those members can hear first-hand about the day and your time there.
See you soon,
Best wishes
Janice Whiteford.

Federation Office hours at WI House:

Open Tuesday to Thursday: 10.00am 12.30pm and 14.00pm 15.00pm. Closed Mondays and Fridays.

Newsletter Editor:
This is my second newsletter and as a WI President remarked to me recently I have big shoes to fill I am well
aware that my predecessor Jean Hammond did a sterling job over the past three years and aim to carry on making
the newsletter accessible to all members of the Federation in a variety of formats.
In addition to the paper copy of the newsletter which is free for our centenary year, from this month each WI
will receive an electronic copy of the newsletter via the email contact for each WI, for distribution to those
members who wish to receive it this way. If you have any questions about this, our Chairman and Digital
Champion Janice Whiteford will be happy to help, and training can be provided. Back copies will also be available
on the Federation Website.
Contributions are very welcome from WIs - please note that the deadline is the 7th of each month for publication
the following month.

Special stamps to celebrate the WI Centenary

The Isle of Man branch of the Women's Institute is proud to have collaborated with The Isle of Man Post Office on
this set of stamps in celebration of one hundred years of camaraderie and campaigning work to improve society
in so many vital aspects. Like their WI Centenary symbol the stamps are rose-scented...
The stamps are depicting a range of images of both the current Isle of Man chapter as well as some of the WIs
most famous campaigns over the past 100 years, and a selection of Island members. Each stamp is set on special
rose scented paper with the pink rose emblem which represents 100 years of contribution. The Isle of Man
Federation was formed in 1950 and currently has 750 members in 30 WIs. If you would like to find out more or
order stamps, you can see more at: https://www.iompost.com/stamps-coins/collection/centenary-of-thewomen-s-institute-. The Office also has a few order forms available that were sent out by the Isle of Man
Federation.

DENMAN AMBASSADOR Jean Hammond

Two weeks after being appointed a North Yorkshire Easts Denman Ambassador, I find myself at Denman being
trained at an overnight stay and day course for as many other federation Ambassadors who were able to
attend. It was a rapid introduction to a new and exciting position within our federation. We were updated with all
the latest Denman figures and plans for the future and given the opportunity to input our thoughts and ideas.
From my point of view it was a chance to meet others with greater experience than myself! If you have any
queries regarding Denman, please contact me and I will do my best to answer them. If I cant find an answer, I
have an all singing all dancing brand new information pack which has EVERYTHING you could possible wish to
know. Best wishes, Jean

Q&A
Question What is the MCS and
how does it affect me?
Answer The MCS (Membership
Communication System) is the
database shared by National and
the Federation Office, holding the
contact details of every member,
the names and contact details of
the officers, and the details of each
WI- such as size of membership,
location and date/time of meeting.
Each WI has an MCS Rep, who is
responsible for adding the details
of new members, deleting those of
past members and updating ongoing information such as change
of address or change of e-mail
address. It is vital that the MCS is
as accurate as possible, and it is as
important that you update your
MCS Rep as that she updates the
MCS!

A Sparkling Relationship

Many chemical materials are characterised by an external shape resulting from a definite internal structure. Such
materials are referred to as crystalline and are distinguished from others with no specific internal arrangement
which scientists call amorphous. Crystals can be cut along planes revealing a surface which sparkles ( e.g. cut
glass). The latter phenomenon arises from reflection of light at many angles along each plane of the crystal. The
father and son partnership of William Henry and William Lawrence Bragg, working at the University of Leeds,
investigated the bending of X-rays as they passed through crystals and showed that each crystal produced a
characteristic pattern on a photographic plate. For this work, they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in
1915. The patterns observed showed that crystals are made of regular repeating arrangements of atoms, like
oranges packed in a box. These patterns demonstrated that X-rays, like light, were wave-like in nature and the
pattern produced was related to the wavelength of the X-rays used. From this initial work the Braggs went on to
determine many structures of small crystals and their efforts led to the creation of the new science of X-ray
crystallography and the establishing of a tool whereby scientists could see the spatial arrangements of atoms
within crystals for the first time using an instrument, designed by William Henry, called an X-ray spectrometer.

MEMBERS NEWS & VIEWS

Hutton Bonville W.I.
At our meeting this month the main
event was a presentation of a notice
board to Lovesome Hill Village Hall. See
photograph. The brass plaque affixed to
the board reads Presented by Hutton
Bonville W.I. to Lovesome Hill village Hall
on the occasion of the Centenary of the
National Federation of W.I.s 1915 2015. The presentation took place on
front of the notice board. The Keys were
handed over to Mary Pearson from the
Village Hall committee by W.I. president
Val Burdis.
This is part of our centenary celebrations as the W.I. has met in the hall for over 75 years and the old notice board
had fallen to pieces. The founder members in 1939 had to meet on the night of the full moon to see to get to the
hall duing the 'Blackout' of the war years.

Brandsby WI fundraising for ACWW
The afternoon was quite chilly but mostly in sunshine and we raised 55 for ACWW by walking and talking in
nearby Crayke for an hour. We then headed back to our village hall for a cup of tea and delicious homemade cake,
brilliant!

Blacksmith Workshop, Sunday 15th March 2015

What a brilliant day seven W.I. Ladies had, we went to Norby and under the excellent tutoring go Adrian and his
assistant Andy we set about some black smithing. Ade's partner Debs supplied us with hot drinks, homemade
biscuits, fruit loaf, cream sponge cake and scones with jam and cream,a veritable feast.
None of us had any experience yet we all produced a key ring before lunch. After lunch things got harder,we
moved onto heavier metal and produced a curved rack holding three coat hooks. The sense of achievement was
just amazing.
Another brilliant day school from the W.I.

Mount Grace Group Outing to Crook Hall

For our Spring Meeting the 5 WIs in Mount Grace Group, Ingleby Arncliffe, Crathorne, Hutton Rudby, Swainby &
Potto and Worsall, went on an outing to Crook Hall in Durham on Wednesday 29th April, organised by Worsall
WI. The bad weather which was forecast fortunately didn't materialise and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the
visit. Crook Hall is a hidden gem on the outskirts of Durham City. It is lived in by Keith and Maggie Bell who have
turned it into a tourist attraction. As well as working in the gardens Keith is a keen artist and many of his
paintings were on display in the Hall.
The Hall is a medieval house with Jacobean and Georgian additions to it and the grounds comprise of just over 6
acres of beautiful gardens, all individual. There is even a maze to get lost in. A brand new cafe and visitor centre
had just opened (for our benefit) and we all enjoyed delicious scones. Lunch was also served in various rooms in
the Hall. We received a very warm welcome and the attention to detail made our visit enjoyable.
There are various statues in the grounds and, to our amusement, in a small graveyard, there is a gravestone to
the "complaining visitor" alongside ones to pet dogs and rabbits.
None of us had ever been to Crook Hall before, but we all vowed to return again, certainly in the summer when
the flowers are in bloom.
Debbie Gravestock, Worsall WI

Wigginton and Haxby Centenary Scarecrow

The Annual Scarecrow Festival took place once again over
the May Bank Holiday weekend, organised by the
Methodist Church, a very popular community event. A
number of ladies volunteered to help create our entry and
it didnt take us long to decide on our theme... we had to
celebrate our Centenary and promote the WI.
We were able to source clothing to dress our two
scarecrows, one as a WI member in 1915 and the other in
2015 enjoying tea and cake, with appropriate accessories.
Posters were printed and displayed to show some of the
campaigns we have been involved in to empower and
support women during our 100 incredible years.
Special thanks to Julie Hill, Vicki Smith, Kay Tester and
Paula Moore.

How Updale celebrated the WI Centenary

On Monday May 5th, Updale WI held a Cream Tea afternoon in the centre of Rosedale Abbey. We created a
display in the rear of the church of St Mary & St Lawrence showing the history of our WI, including several
photographs, along with a brief history of the WI from its foundation in Stoney Creek in Canada in 1897 and also
in Great Britain in 1915.
Over 80 Cream Teas, consisting of homemade scones with jam and cream, served with tea or coffee were enjoyed
in the afternoon sun in the school play area. We were delighted to welcome many ladies from other local WIs
and their families and friends along with lots of other visitors to the village and of course locals too. Many people
also took advantage of a tombola stall, where lots of lovely prizes were won.

One of our members made a beautiful centenary celebration cake which was shared after an address from our
President and a few words from a previous President before she cut the cake.
It was a really superb day the weather was very kind to us! Many thanks to all of our supporters.
Janet Dring, Updale WI President
Burniston & Cloughton WI
As part of this years 100th anniversary
celebrations which are being held throughout
the country, Burniston & Cloughton WI invited
members of the Endeavour Group Whitby which
includes
Hinderwell,
Hawsker,
Staithes,
Fylingdales and Ruswarp to afternoon tea at
Raven Hall Hotel Ravenscar.
The venue and tea were excellent, the company
brilliant and the view over Robin Hood's Bay
superb. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the
occasion, so much so that it is likely to become
an annual event.
