Chairmans Chat
Hello everyone,
April has been a very busy month for me as your Chairman. I have attended 2 Group Centenary Celebrations - one
at lunchtime and the other in the evening - both very enjoyable. I have visited 3 WIs as well as attended the East
Yorkshire Federation Council Meeting, and helped at two successful workshops. It has been lovely to talk to so
many members of the WI, drink endless cups of tea and eat more meals!
So, I have just returned from a few days away of relaxation and sightseeing in Jersey; before gearing up for a week
away in London.
After ballots, spreadsheets, planning buses, numerous phone calls, the time for the Royal Garden Party has
arrived. We have filled all tickets allocated to the Federation. It is a great shame that some people have been
disappointed and have not been able to go at the last minute. Buses will leave North Yorkshire at the crack of
dawn on June 2nd for what I hope will be a day to remember at The Palace.
The following day, 2 buses will leave North Yorkshire for the Annual Meeting at the Royal Albert Hall, again in the
presence of Royalty; how wonderful it will be to be there and experience it first-hand. I hope those of you who are
going to the live screenings around the Federation will have an equally exciting day. Thank you to all who have
organised the screenings a first of this type of event for us. Please send in your memories of the day and photos
for the Newsletter so that we can all see what your day was like.
Delegates please remember to go to your link WIs, if you can, with your report of the Annual Meeting, so that
those members can hear first-hand about the day and your time there.
See you soon,
Best wishes
Janice Whiteford.
Newsletter Editor:
This is my second newsletter and as a WI President remarked to me recently I have big shoes to fill I am well
aware that my predecessor Jean Hammond did a sterling job over the past three years and aim to carry on making
the newsletter accessible to all members of the Federation in a variety of formats.
In addition to the paper copy of the newsletter which is free for our centenary year, from this month each WI
will receive an electronic copy of the newsletter via the email contact for each WI, for distribution to those
members who wish to receive it this way. If you have any questions about this, our Chairman and Digital
Champion Janice Whiteford will be happy to help, and training can be provided. Back copies will also be available
on the Federation Website.
Contributions are very welcome from WIs - please note that the deadline is the 7th of each month for publication
the following month.

Bursaries
The Board of Trustees decided that to make
things easier and reduce paperwork, when a
member wins a Bursary, Denman vouchers will
be sent out for the value of each Bursary directly
to the members who have won after their
names being drawn at Council Meetings. The
vouchers are valid three years from the date of
issue and can be used to pay for part or the
whole of a course booked at Denman.

Two weeks after being appointed a North Yorkshire Easts Denman Ambassador, I find myself at Denman being
trained at an overnight stay and day course for as many other federation Ambassadors who were able to
attend. It was a rapid introduction to a new and exciting position within our federation. We were updated with all
the latest Denman figures and plans for the future and given the opportunity to input our thoughts and ideas.
From my point of view it was a chance to meet others with greater experience than myself! If you have any
queries regarding Denman, please contact me and I will do my best to answer them. If I cant find an answer, I
have an all singing all dancing brand new information pack which has EVERYTHING you could possible wish to
know. Best wishes, Jean

Q&A
Question What is the MCS and
how does it affect me?
Answer The MCS (Membership
Communication System) is the
database shared by National and
the Federation Office, holding the
contact details of every member,
the names and contact details of
the officers, and the details of each
WI- such as size of membership,
location and date/time of meeting.
Each WI has an MCS Rep, who is
responsible for adding the details
of new members, deleting those of
past members and updating ongoing information such as change
of address or change of e-mail
address. It is vital that the MCS is
as accurate as possible, and it is as
important that you update your
MCS Rep as that she updates the
MCS!

A Sparkling Relationship
Many chemical materials are characterised by an external shape resulting from a definite internal structure. Such
materials are referred to as crystalline and are distinguished from others with no specific internal arrangement
which scientists call amorphous. Crystals can be cut along planes revealing a surface which sparkles ( e.g. cut
glass). The latter phenomenon arises from reflection of light at many angles along each plane of the crystal. The
father and son partnership of William Henry and William Lawrence Bragg, working at the University of Leeds,
investigated the bending of X-rays as they passed through crystals and showed that each crystal produced a
characteristic pattern on a photographic plate. For this work, they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in
1915. The patterns observed showed that crystals are made of regular repeating arrangements of atoms, like
oranges packed in a box. These patterns demonstrated that X-rays, like light, were wave-like in nature and the
pattern produced was related to the wavelength of the X-rays used. From this initial work the Braggs went on to
determine many structures of small crystals and their efforts led to the creation of the new science of X-ray
crystallography and the establishing of a tool whereby scientists could see the spatial arrangements of atoms
within crystals for the first time using an instrument, designed by William Henry, called an X-ray spectrometer.

One of our members made a beautiful centenary celebration cake which was shared after an address from our
President and a few words from a previous President before she cut the cake.
It was a really superb day the weather was very kind to us! Many thanks to all of our supporters.

Burniston & Cloughton WI
As part of this years 100th anniversary
celebrations which are being held throughout
the country, Burniston & Cloughton WI invited
members of the Endeavour Group Whitby which
includes
Hinderwell,
Hawsker,
Staithes,
Fylingdales and Ruswarp to afternoon tea at
Raven Hall Hotel Ravenscar.
The venue and tea were excellent, the company
brilliant and the view over Robin Hood's Bay
superb. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the
occasion, so much so that it is likely to become
an annual event.
