Directors narrative

First task I had to do for this edit is import my music track and but it in the time line first. I also put in a custom solid which lets me work on my Video clips while the audio track is in tacked. I then started with the opening title, which engages the audience with the flashing lights, which is a good theme and relatable to Day N Night song. Then it goes straight into the story with the two main characters walking down a path. For this shot I have used a cold steel effect which makes the picture look dark a doll. This suits the narrative because the two friends are involved in crime, and this shot shows it. For this shot I also slow down the time by clicking on slow then increasing it two 25%. I think this is a good effect with the medium close up to show the audience the two main characters in the narrative. By using a dissolve editing technique it goes to the next shot.

The next shot is a medium close up of the main characters walking down the path, this time the cold steel effect is different. This is because I change the filtering points in different places, which creates this nice blue effect behind it. This is to give it a creative feel which shows the two main characters are into crime. It then dissolves to the next scene which the two main characters steel someones wallet. I kept the cold steel effect and added a vigilante mask which gives the corners a bit of shadows which shows the main characters are doing bad stuff. Lighting and filtering makes a lot of difference to explain the narrative beater, but if I used lighter colour and no shadow it wouldnt give it the gritty criminal look. As one of the main characters is confronting the man, the other is behind and pickpockets his wallet. As the bad character is doing this I cut some of the clip so I can make some of it slow motion to show clearly that the character has took the wallet. It cuts to a two shot of the characters running away from the victim. A cold steel effect mixed with a vigilante mask is used throughout the scene to show the criminality of the characters.

The two characters are running away then the shot dissolves into a sunset. I used a Dissolve convention to show the story moving forward to the next day. The sun is going down in a fast pace then I used a fade to black editing process to show a close up of a sun rising instead of setting. With the sun set original clip it didnt really look much so I added hard light that gives it that massive heat wave colour which you can see on the screen. Then by using another dissolve the shot transforms into the next scene. The next shot is a two shot which shows the characters walking. With the lyric that comes up after this shot not that fast there is a cut to the beat. I also slowed down the clip by using slow motion tool to give it irony. With these shots I used two filters one was Tea and green which makes the colours more stylish and abstract then I used a vigilante mask that gives it the shadow round the edges. I needed to change some of the points on the effect window to make this shot look good. By using a blue transition the shot changes and goes into a lip-syncing scene. I used chrome key to use my night background, which is abstract and supernatural, with the earth and the moon as one. I also change the blend mode to 30%, which gives the character a fade effect while he is lip-syncing. The shot dissolve back into the current story where the two friends are arguing, this shot has the same effect so it keeps its style. To do this I went on copy clip and then paste attributes to the current shot of the two characters. There is a zoom and pan transition, which works as a seamless, edit where the audience doesnt notice the cut. This goes back to another lip-syncing part then the shot dissolves into the two characters. I used a quick cut of the bad character giving a hand signal to the other meaning he has had enough with him.

After that shot it quick cuts a cuts to the beat for the performance part of the track. Now the performance scene is made up of two elements Day and Night I wanted to show that clearly as possible, so what I did was use chrome key for all green screen clips for this performance part. Then I resourced two separate backgrounds one for both elements, by composting and blend mode I change the mode from normal to stencil alpha, which gives me this reverse silhouette. By making the performer more abstract I added a hard light effect to give more colour tones. This whole performance part goes on for about 20 seconds (from 52:19-1:12:14) before going back into the third verse of the song. I used straight cuts through because it looks perfect the way it is and it doesnt need anything more other wise it rowing it. After the performance there is another lip-syncing part which is very quick with the lyric Et et and night this then cuts back to the story of the characters.

The next shot hoes with the lyric hold the phone as a gang member is calling the bad character over to him, this shot cuts to the beat. There is a dissolve edit used to keep the story flowing with creative transitions that make viewers continue watching. The next may be confusing but the purpose of using a colour change with the same shot. This shows the bad character as come out of the safe zone and going into crime at a massive scale. After I used a gradient image to show an over the shoulder shoot which shows the good character looking at a street dancer. I then used a straight cut which shows the bad character going towards the gang member. This goes along with the lyric his on the move cant seem to shake his shade; I then use a zoom and pan to show the good character going towards the dancer. At 01:26:01 I use another gradient image which works better then a dissolve to show the continuity and cutting to the beat. Where the bad character is nudging fist with the gang member showing that he has just gone into a gang from that very moment. As soon as the character sits, there is another gradient image to show the good character going to the dancers. I used another colour change effect showing the good character has started a new life as a street dancer. The effect is glory, which gives this glow round the characters. As the good character and the dancer shake hands I used a flash transition to show the bad character and the gang member together. This is also a parallel edit showing the good character with the street dancers and the bad character with the gang member. When the camera shows the bad character I use three different effects to build this light doll colour to show that these characters are criminals. I use quick cuts throughout this scene to show the narrative moving forward. The effect is Threshold, hard light and luma keyer. I then use a blur transition to show the street dancer teaching the good character some moves. After I use a bloom effect to show the gang member and the bad character leaving the area, I use a quick cut and a fast gradient image to show the characters moving on. I use a wipe transition, which is not often used in music videos but however it makes sense with the cut. The good character is dancing then with another quick cut with a bloom edit the gang member and bad character are out of the picture. I use a fade in and out transition to show the good character lip-syncing more lyrics, there is another fade effect on the good character to show he is not actually in space. This picks out the fantasy and the reality. At the end of this shot I used another fade transition to show two gang members. Now for this shot I used chrome key to a whole new level with filters, masks and layers to make this shot as believable as possible. This tow shot shows two gang members talking to each over; I used a rain effect and a cold steel filter that gives the scene a grime look. I then used a gradient edit. The next shot is the good character dancing while walking up a set of stairs. This is parallel editing to show while the gang members are talking the good character is performing. After this shot a simple transition is used to go back to the bad character.

The next shot is a medium shot showing the bad character with the gang members. The bad character is handing over the wallet, which him and the good character nicked off a guy a day ago. After this shot I use a directional blur edit to consistency of the music video. With the good character Dancing in the day while the bad character is committing crimes during the night is another way to show off the theme of the song. After this there is another cut to the beat for the next shot?

I used parallel editing to show the Good character dancing while the gang members and the bad character robbing a guy for his money. This starts at 2:07:07 and ends at 2:26:07.With the good character I used a glory effect to show that he is doing what he wants by dancing. Also the unlucky person and the robbers have a cold steel effect to show that they are commenting a crime and the victim is in shock. With the green screen I had to use ken burns and motion to fir the background movement with the characters, it is difficult work but it paid off. The music video reaches a climax at 2:26:10, which is a jump cut for the bad character as he is approaching the gang members he hangs around with. But this time the gang members arent happy to see him. This sequence is happening at a completely different time where the good character is dancing, so Im showing two different dimensions Day and Night. At 2:24:24 I used another colour change where the good character has an glory effect then as hi puts is foot on the first step it changes using a dissolve edit.

This shot then cuts to show the gang members talking, then by using a zoom and pan edit I show the good character getting to the top of the stairs, meaning his at the point in life he wants to be. The shot cuts to the bad character walking towards the two-gang members. I use a quick cut to show the good character again then straight to the gang members, which is a two shot. After it cuts the good character for the last time, I used slow motion to show the dance moves with a cool style. The last shot has the bad character walking up then being shot, and then the screen fades to black. This also goes perfect with the last lyric et et n Night. Finished
