Chapter 4: Planning and Building the Choral Program Kenneth H. Phillips 2004

Chapter 4 in the textbook is a very important one that deals with how to plan as a choral educator. Being in MusEd 376 has opened my eyes to exactly how much choral programs can very from one to the next. It is important that every educator make sure they are aware of the situation that they are getting into when they take a particular job. I have a very specific vision for my future choral program, therefore it is essential that I am taking a job with a school district that supports that vision, or parts of it at least. The last part of the chapter also discusses auditions for choirs and how they should be handled. As discussed in class, I believe that every school should have the option of a non-auditioned ensemble. This would allow for all students to participate in choir in some way regardless of their level of experience or talent. During auditions, it is important that the educator know exactly what they are looking for in members. The teacher should also provide detailed feedback that can be discussed with the students after auditions should they choose.
