Mechanism of Action Synthetic anticholinergic drug, blocks cholinergic responses in the CNS

Indication Parkinsonian syndrome especially to counteract muscular rigidity and tremor; extrapyramidal symptoms

Contraindication Narrow angle glaucoma, mechanical stenosis in gastrointestinal (GIT) and megacolon; prostatic adenoma and diseases leading to perilous tachycardia. Hypersensitivity to biperiden

Nursing Responsibilities Apply the ten rights of drug administration: o Patient o Drug o Dosage o Time o Route o History o Allergy o Intervention o Educate o Documentation Instruct patient that doses should not be doubled, but missed dose may be taken up to 2 hrs before next dose Teach patient not to discontinue this drug abruptly; taper off over a week to prevent withdrawal symptoms Avoid activities that require alertness, may cause dizziness, drowsiness and blurring of vision Caution patient to rise slowly from sitting or recumbent position to minimize orthostatic hypotension Teach patient to use gum, hard candy, and frequent sips of water to decrease dry mouth
