EDCT 2030 Lesson Plan

Instructor: Eric Simon Lesson Duration: 50 minutes Topic: Introduction to Science Fiction Unit Objectives: Introduce students to the overarching theme of social criticism in science fiction. Students will be given background information on George Orwell, and the novel 1984. Students will be given background information on Cory Doctorow, an the novel Little Brother. Lesson Summary: Students will be given historical context to science fiction through the vehicle of an iMovie, explaining social criticism within the genre. They will also be given brief description of the two authors they will be reading, through a powerpoint. Also, we will discuss world events that may have influenced the authors. Students will complete a worksheet testing their knowledge and preconceptions of science fiction. Materials: Computer, with prepared iMovie Projector to show said movie 20 copies of worksheet Pencil to fill out worksheet 20 copies of novel 1984 20 copies of novel Little Brother Powerpoint of historical info on authors Instructional Procedures: Activity: Complete worksheet. Have students complete the science fiction worksheet, and have a brief discussion on what students think. Estimated Time: 15 minutes. Activity: Show iMovie, giving background on social criticism in science fiction. Estimated time: 5 minutes Activity: Hand out books, have students fill out ownership sheet. Estimated time: 5 minutes Activity: Discuss the two authors of the books, and the historical periods during which they wrote and how that affected the writing of the novels, using a Powerpoint. Estimated Time: 25 minutes
