Group ______Underground Railroad_________ (what did they present on)

What do I already know about this subject (do this part before the group presents)?

What are two new things that I learned?

• Between 1810-1850 the South lost 100,000 slaves

• Started by a society of Quakers
• People that helped her were Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass
• Presidents at the time had slaves
• Sometimes people known as conductors posed as a slave, entered the plantation
and helped the slaves escape

How did the primary source help further my understanding?

• They traveled 10-20 miles by night

• I noticed that he (Levi Coffin) actually cared what his wife thought when he says
“I knew that my wife’s feelings regarding this matter were the same as mine”
which is unusual for the time
• Having money was important to help the slaves
• He received passengers weekly

How might this relate to Kindred?

• Maybe a slave will take a trip on the Underground Railroad. Maybe Dana?
• The time of the book is the same as the time of the Underground Railroad
• Rufus might help the girl go somewhere else so his dad won’t keep her and make
her a slave
• Maybe Kevin or Rufus will become a part of the Underground Railroad
